err.....what is painting a bud?
Yup, just what chi said. I don't use veg oil though or a brush but that means nothing.
Ok before your male pops you need to get it as far away from the ladies as possible. Set it in a window or anyplace you can isolate it with light. I use a florescent light I germ with. As soon as you get a few flowers dropping pollen ( you'll see it on the leaves ) get a CLEAN and DRY film canister ( is what I use ) to collect the pollen in. Hold the film canister just under the flower and tap it lightly with a toothpick. The pollen will fall in the canister. Tap it really lightly or you'll get to enjoy fishing em back out. Do that to a couple flowers or collect as much as you want. A little bit will go along way.
I cut the male after this and take care of all the mess ( vaccum the area/ bag the plant ). Now get the happy, soon to be mother, away from the rest of the ladies. I just pull mine out of the box and close it back up.
Pick the bud, branch, branches, you want to pollenate. I pol a whole top branch some people I have read prefer to use a lower branch than sacrifice a top. I get a feel good knowing all the best is going to my seeds. I use a bread tie and twist it together in a big ring around the branch I seed so I can find it after drying/ harvest. Now take a tooth pick and scrape a little bit off the side of the canister. If you can actually see something on the toothpick that is plenty for a flower. Now gently wipe it on the flowers hairs. Don't be afraid to move the hairs around and get it in there but don't smash them either. And on to the next flower. I work from the bottom to the top. When your all done lightly mist the branch down with distilled water ( again just what I use ) and return her to the ladies.
In a week to two you'll see more of the flower pods ( looks like anyways they'll be slightly fatter (pregnant)) with the same 2 starting hairs only if the pollination was successful ( I never had one fail ) they will turn color.
I wait for the bracts to split then I harvest that plant.
CONGRADULATIONS you gonna be a daddy. Have fun
