Hello everyone im new here and just trying out some bagseed. I honestly dont plan on making a huge yeild or anything, I am just looking to test my luck a little and do this for fun i dont even care if I get males. Anyways, I was wondering how long it should take for my seedlings to go from taproot to seedling/vegetative stage, where the leaves are just starting. I germinated them for three days in water then maybe two or three days on paper which gave most maybe four to five centimeters tap roots. Right now they are in Miracle Grow seed starting soil with a CFL light on over it. Thanks
If it is possible and you have some more seed than I would recommend starting over. 4 -5 cm for an exposed tap root is 1 - 3/4 to 2" long and that is a potential problem. And as indicated above a seedling is technically in vegetative growth from the moment it sprouts.
There are many ways to germinate seeds, the simplest being placing them directly into your medium for which MG seed starter works well. If you want to germinate I will outline my way and I'm sure others will give theirs as well. I fold a paper towel into about a 2" square ( I do single seed ) and get it damp, not wet. I open the last fold and place the seed in the center and place this into a baggie with the name marked on the outside and put in a warm darkish place 65 - 80 degrees.
NOTE: //If your seeds are more than 2 years old or you suspect they have dried excessively from poor storage you can soak them for 12 - 24 hours in a bowl of water to re-hydrate them.//
The seeds will crack open and the tap root will appear in 12 hours up to a week depending on freshness and genetics. I then place the seeds in the medium with the crack and emerging root on top and horizontal to the already saturated medium about 3/8" deep and cover lightly and then mist until wet with a spray bottle. CAUTION: Use a pair of tweezers and handle the seed gently when putting into the medium, this is a crucial time for your emerging baby and great care should be taken at this point. The tap root will emerge from the crack, turn down and lift the plant out of the ground most often leaving the seed husk behind. If you are going to use CFL lighting then do yourself a favor and do some reading in the CFL forum, ask questions and good luck. Larry
