I have just completed my first grow but as it was one seed under a 400W hps and 2 x 125w cfl...the one plant was a bute! However ive now vegged 3 more and 3 more coming through is 400W enough for 6 OR would a 600W greatly improve the depth of quality grow?

It depends on the size of the plants. A 400w certainly can be more than enough to get the most out of three plants. The prime lighting area under a 400w is about one to three feet away and about 2.5x2.5' floor space. Closer than 10" will burn the plants and over about three feet from the bulb, the bud quality will suffer. If your plants can fit into that space when done flowering, the 400w is plenty.

I would go with a 600w if I could do it over, started with the 400w. As mentioned 100w per plant is a decent rule to go by.

No its not really 100w per plant it all depends on the plant I have 16 plants under my 400w hps I am upgrading to a 1000w soon for better performance. You have to decide whether you want a lot of small plants or fewer larger plants.
