How many plants should there be in one room?

Hypothetically: If vegged for 25 days and flowered for 55 days, which makes it a total of 80 days under 4x 1000W HPS in a room of 80 square feet, then how many plants should one have in this room?

I want to know how much of a difference does it make in terms of total yield, if there is:
a) more smaller plants
b) or less bigger plants

I have heard people saying how many grams do they get per plant on average, but it surely isn't as informative in terms of sharing results as saying how many grams per watt of light.

It means that results depend mostly on the amount of light given to plants rather than "how many plants are there".

Does more plants mean more yield when grown under same circumstances for the same lenght of time?

What is a good ratio and does it make a lot of difference if plants are being grown in soil, coco or in some other hydro/aero systems?

Less plants requires more veg time.

As for how many plants to run in each area.

Remember a 1000w can cover at best a 5x5 footprint.

The average plant count per light for most using 1000w is anywhere from 6-9 larger plants.

You see with a 1000w you are able to grow plants that are 4ft tall.
Penetration of a 1000w light is between 3-5ft depending upon reflectors used.

Why wast almost 5ft of penetration power on 1-1.5ft tall SOG plants.

Just doesn't seem logical to me.

If using a 400-600w then SOG is a good method for reducing overall trimming time and having a higher quality bud at the end.

IMO.

You should choose 6 plants per light with around 6-8weeks of veg time. A little training such as topping with a small lollypopping of the bottoms.

from my experience. veg them 2 feet tall topping them all to 6 or 8 tops each . and 6 five gallon pots.. so 6 plants per light this way from seed will pull an average from 2 to 5 zips a plant. this works best for me .

i agree ^^, i mean technically thats waayyy to general of a question. all strains grow differently, there are many types of growing, and different ways to train your plants it would be easier to say how much room do you nee per light. i use a 4x4 square per 1000 watt light. and i have 2 plants under each under a scrog screen in 5 gallon buckets.

But why not 16x 4 gallon pots per 1000W of light instead of 6x 6 gallon pots? 16x 4 gallons is 64 gallons of growth medium for the roots, but 6x 6 gallons is only 36 gallons - almost two times less. Don't you think it would be a waste of light? 16x 4 gallon pots would cover 4x4 feet area which should be exactly what 1000W HPS would be able to do, if you said 1000W covers 5x5 at best. I wonder why most growers choose 6-9 plants per 1000W instead of 16... Don't you think 16 plants per 1000W would yield more, especially when 16 plants have more growth medium for the roots too?

I understand it is somehow a question of preferance, but I still think that light is precious and it should not be wasted. Thank you for the response, by the way

Most choose 9 plants that finish around 3-4ft tall. With at minimum 4oz per plant. So 9 plants at 4oz each = 36oz per 1000w.

16 plants at 2ft tall to allow for the extra room they take up with approx 2oz per plant is 32oz.


16plants per light is 64 plants in total spread over 4 lights = full time job watering and inspecting plants unless you choose a flood and drain hydro system.


Most folks like to keep plant numbers down and yields up.


Would you want 64 plants to hand water. Or 36 large plants? Or 24 larger plants?


SOG growing was designed for a 400w setup not a 1000w.

paying off the credit card
Putting the mortgage away for the next 3 months
AND HAVE A COKE FUELLED WEEKEND

Ok, I get it... but it seems though that 64 plants would make their way to harvest in less time than bigger plants would.

More work is a good point though, but it MAY pay off, if:
a) you happen to like the idea of a full time job
b) and you have limited time to work your ass off

It you are hell bent on SOG please for the love of god utilise a 400 or 600w.

You're talking about light being precious etc but SOG requires plants less than 3ft tall. Meaning your precious light is lost in the plant pots for a further 1ft of penetration that's just lighting up plastic.

I have difficulties understanding that penetration thing you're trying to explain. Doesn't it mean that with 1000W bulbs I could keep the light further from plants? The bigger the distance between the plants and the bulb, the bigger the area covered by light? If the area one 1000W bulb covers is 5x5 feet at best, then don't you think I could have a bit more than 9 plants there?

If I'm doing 16 plants per 4x4 feet area and let them grow 3 feet tall, does it make it a SOG?

I'm not doubting your knowledge. I just really want to understand what I'm doing.

I know some people prefer to grow plants big and tall. Other people in the other hand prefer to go for sog and scrog method.

.. so I figured I'd go somewhere in between.. for medium sized plants I guess..

well put it this way with the same watts I could pull more from 1 plant then I could pull off of 10 plants. you need to find what best works for you . with a thousand watt light should veg them 2 feet tall finish height about 5 or 6 feet . 5 or 6 plants per light . what I like to do . or if your plant number is low. and your skill level is high one 7 foot tall veg tie flat and fower 1 plant per light . it don't matter the number it matters is surface area , if the light is 1.5 feet higher then the plants and you can only spread it so much . experimenting is the only way you know what I best for you . right now my plant number is legal 72. so 6 plants per light small veg 16 inches tall and the finish height 4 .5 feet tall and pulling 3 zips each plant. topping the shit out of them my own sog system. most people hate doing it how I do them and I may hay how they do them. it come down to playing around see what is best for you .
