How many plants under a 400w ?

Getting ready for my first ever indoor grow, my total floor space in my area is 2' x 4.5' . I'm trying to figure out how many plants I should try to squeeze under the light.From what I am looking at here, it seems like 4 pots in a 2' x 2' space would be optimal, or possibly 6 pots in a 2' x 3' might work.Just do not know if my light will give satisfactory coverage on a 3' wide grow.

If you are experienced with a 400w please post what you were able to get away with.

something like this would allow you to use all that space in your closet... if you got an extra hundred+ bucks...

ive got 4 plants under a 400w hps at the min covers them all nicely and when i have 6 it does the same job over 6 is pushing it a bit i think i also use two cfls at both ends for extra light at the sides just when flowering

i do 6

they take up an area of 42" by 24" and the light covers them good but yea I dont think more than six is ideal but im new to this

know the best way to find out put your pots under your light and switch it on find out your self

I use a 400 watt light, and the number of plants depends on alot, like your growing style. Is it a sog grow, or what? How long and tall will you veg them for?

The best way for you to understand your light, is that it covers a 3x3 foot area adequately.

What everyone said. It also depends on what stage of growth you are in. I have 4 smaller plants (2 weeks old) under my 400w. They are in 5" pots, so I could easily squeeze another 4 under there (total of . However, once I transplant to my 12" pots, I think 4 would be the limit for optimal lighting. Now, you could make the decision to keep your girls in smaller pots, which might allow more plants (depending on how tall and bushy they are). Good luck.

Vidoeman made a good point, what kind of grow are you doing? I've heard of guys using two plants in a scrog under a HPS and it turned out great, I also follow the 3x3 guideline.

this was my first grow under the 400hps...Wacky Bag Seed Input Please !!!!

grow and learn....i now have a 600hps on the way

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will be starting these from seed in 16 oz cups ( using daylight+FL )for about
2.5 weeks then putting them into 10 inch 2 gal. pots and using my 400w MH/HPS to harvest. From everything I have read it sounds like I want the plants to be 2ft or so after the 12/12 stretch so I am thinking about flowering them at about 10" ( which seems tiny ).I think I will prob grow for top colas to keep it simple for my first indoor, but that could very well change once I see what I have going.Just about all of my growing experience is outdoor, so I am not used to having to worry about space
and stuff .

i have 15 in 4" pots in a 2x2 area. 2 175w MH's there doing great with mylar wrapped around. i might keep 2 or 3 for clones in another section for the next batch. but i'll fit 12 in the 2x2 area any way i can.

I use a 400w mh. I grow 4 plants under my they are doing quite well.
