Yes, IDLE saves energy. It allows me to use a large fan with a huge cfm (650) for those hot days when I need the extra circulation, but still run at a lower speed (idle) when I just need normal circulating air. Basically, it's replaced my need for an AC. If it gets hot, the fan will kick into high gear and keep my temps right where I want them without AC.
