I see that this thread went from 2013 up to 2018...Why not add a few more yrs, because it IS A GOOD TOPIC....I've been growing since 1979 (INDOOR HYDRO)....Started with flourescent lighting BECAUSE, there was no such thing as HID GROW LIGHT available for purchase....Of course NO internet back then either...we relied in WONDERFUL publications (ie. High Times magazine) for info, AND A LOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR.....
Your plants only need approx HALF the lumens to Fully Veg with node spacing that is realistic for that strain....Of course, some strains can process more than others....EVER WONDER why sativa strains have such narrow leaves....They are basically equitorial varieties that are seeing EXTREME light and heat....land race sativa strains have adapted to the light intensity by keeping the leaf blades narrow...CONVERSLY, landrace indica varieties are in much higher (and lower) latitudes where the intensity of the sun is less and fall comes quickly...THEY have adapted by developing BROAD leaves to collect more of the lower levels of available light...
Good rule of thumb with 1000w HID lighting is 4ft over your plants...DONT use a 1000w in a space too small or 400-600w systems in a space to large...Plenty of charts online that will tell you wattage per area.....If there is any thought of expanding, just opt for the 1000w...Then it will work for a larger area....In a smaller space, just adjust it down....penetration is a big consideration...Artificial light loses linear intensity FAST....YOU WANT that penetration the 1000w gives you....
Someone mentions drooping leaves with too much intensity...YES, they can, BUT MORE COMMONLY, top leaves will twist over in protest of the light intensity, and even bleach....A 1000w system WILL give you better, and larger tops providing you use it properly....ALWAYS WATCH FOR HEAT ISSUE if your using HID...A 1000w HID IS HOT!!!!....I vent mine with a squirrel cage fan going into the attic...Works nice, cause its also drawing FRESH air into my closet....I STRONGLY recommend light movers...I've used them since their inception and believe it give you the most homogeneously ripening and size buds....It ELIMINATES shading in conjunction with selective defoliation....A stationary 1000w light creates hot spots if your get too close (under 4ft)...my space is 4ft by 5ft and I STILL opt for a mover...I had to shorten one I bought...ALTHOUGH the 1000w gives me 50w per sq ft (NICE NUMBER) it doesn't take care of shading issues...My buds are ALL hit by good light and from many angles...THAT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!...USE THE 1000w light, just use it responsibly....Happy growing...YT
