How Much Light Do I Need In 8 x 4 x 6.6 Grow Tent?

I'm looking to get HPS lights... How much wattage do I need? How many lights? and where online should I buy them? I plan on buying a 8 x 4 x 6.6 tent off amazon.

Height = 6.6

I typically use a 1000 watt HPS over a 4x4 area so I would use two 1000's.

Would 4, 315 CMH's be more suitable? I was told by the guy at Growers Choice CMH's are better then HPS. What would be more cost effective? I live in Canada where should I buy my lights from?

What kind of cooling do I need for this?

I'm new, can anyone recommend a place to get complete units?

For max production in a given area using artificial lighting I stand by HPS. DE HPS is even better. Still have yet to see anything that makes the most of a given canopy. Maybe get better grams per watt numbers using other lighting, maybe, but the total amount one can get from a given space is where HPS rules.

Minimum is 2x 600w hps
2x 630cmh would work great.
2x1000w hps would also work great provided you make sure ventilation is set up for that wattage.

Where you buy your equipment is down to what country your in. For me Ebay is the best option for that type of lighting.

Don't rush into anything.

Edit, sorry I missed the post where you said you were from Canada. There are some specific Canadian threads on here, talk to your fellow growers.

I'm big new CMH fan:grin:, 4x315w sounds good for a 4x8 tent.
I got my CMH from an eBay.ca top-rated seller for $300ea. to my door.

I don't have any "bulb cooling" anymore, the 315's run much cooler than 600HPS, I have two fans for air circulation and a 8in ventilation filter/fan combo.

I would like to do veg and flower in the same room. Giving them a month of veg from clone, then putting them into flowering.

What type of bulb?

you put in 2 x 1000 hps or mh you better have some fan to move that heat cause its gonna get hot

Everyone of these comments you’re writing says to me that you’ve done no research yourself about what’s involved.

My advice.

Hold off buying anything until you’ve read about the following.

Lighting types

Ventilation requirements for exhaust and intakes and air cooled hoods

Nutrients and nutrient uptake in plants

Substrate differences


Otherwise your about to make a very expensive leap into something that’s going to cause you a lot of headaches.

There are plenty of tutorials and journals etc for you to read here on RIU.


Then when you’re ready and you have a plan of what equipment you require, what substrate you’ll use, which nutrient line you’ll use and actually how to grow a plant knowledge then come back here with your plan and ask us if it sounds viable.

I have done my research. I am asking others opinions on what I should use (Doing Research). As I understand if I use 4 315 CMH i'm not going to really need to do much to cool the bulbs as they don't run that hot. So I will probably do that. The only thing I was really wondering was how I was going to most effectively light up a tent with such a low ceiling as 6 foot 6.
I don't have anymore questions.. It's been a long time since I have grown indoors, I was asking because HPS are old technology now. But when I was growing they where the best thing out there. Now we have LED's and CMH.

You can go ahead and close this thread.. I was doing research by gathering different opinions to gain a higher perspective. I got my few opinions.

It will take sometime to buy the equipment. However I got a sponsor that will help me out when I get into a new place to live.
