How necessary is Carbon Filter for beginning of the Grow?

My current set up is...

Secret Jardin Dark Room 120 4x4


with 430 Son Aggro Watt Light with Air cooled reflector , digital ph meter, and hygro/thermometer

and I have fans circulating the air.

I plan on putting in a carbon filter when the plant starts growing bigger, is a carbon filter change results for the beginning of a grow?

no as long as the ventilation is the same it is just going to eliminate the odor. Plants will start smelling younger than you might think and you may even not be able to smell it as good as other people. If your in an area where security is needed more like an apartment or where there is traffic you might want to get it soon. My plants started smelling at 3 weeks veg and really reaked about 5-6 weeks in veg. They stink up the whole bedroom when I open the door in the morning.

Yea, when the plants are in Vege they have a hint of weed smell but they just smell like fresh plant for the most part.

By circulating the air you mean venting right? THAT needs to be done right away. If your just blowing air around in the tent that don't cut it. Assuming you are venting the tent, just keep in mind that once you put the filter in you are most likely going to suck a lot of power from the fan. Certainly this depends on the fan and the filter, but just be careful with your temps after you add the filter and be prepared to upgrade your fan if you have to.

My plants started to smell right around the 2nd week in the closet, 3rd week the room, 4th week the house. DIY carbon filter and an inline fan took care of the smell so much yu can't even smell it in the room.

Granted ,it is one of the priciest purchases for your room. Plus, count on buying a squirell fan to pull contaminated air through the carbon filter(You need one that will pull the amount of air based on the square ft. of space in the room. I'm running a 265cfm and my carbon filter is a little larger than a 5 gal bucket. These 2 items were a little less than $500 about 6yrs ago. As far as I'm concerned odor control is the most important part of a serious indoor grow (in an apt. or w/neighbors in close proximity) I also use a uno-vaire & ona block..

I waited until it was bad before I got a scrubber and I think it just desensitized me to the smell...which i think is a bad thing.
I got a Can-filter system with 25lb filter that's good for one year. Considered building but I wanted too long and the smell was too bad to wait. Be prepared... its more cost effective.

yeah, but definitely make one yourself, don't buy it. it's among the most expensive item you can make for cheapest yourself. I made the equivalent of a six inch, 400 cfm can fan that costs upwards of $200+, for about $45. and I have leftover activated carbon to make extra air filters. With a 430 W hps you are going to get some giant, sticky smelly buds, no doubt.

it take a bit of practice, but I just re-mixed the carbon in mine, crushed it up a little, and there's no room smell. on top of just resettling the carbon, you can actually re-activate it yourself, using it for several grows. you just need to soak it in a strong bleach solution and then bake it. I've got a three foot stinky skunk #1 plant you can only smell inside the cab.
