Once, only because i had taken everything down to take s short break from growing. I hand washed it, as gently as i could but noticed the prefilter got bigger and didnt fit quite so snugly around filter, which stopped it from doing its job. Pre filters are cheap, just get 2 per carbon filter so you can just switch it out, if you think its getting too dirty. Filtering your intake air helps a lot too. I have a rectangle air intake to my room and use a furnace filter, it catches a lot and i keep things clean.

If your environment is consisting of poor air quality or high dust, you might find the prefiter to get brown and dirty, then you can wash it in a bucket of water or in the bath with a mild dish soap and toss in the dryer on low/no heat for maybe 5-10 minutes. Good as new and spanking white.

When gummed up, they will start to choke out the scrubber's ability to filter much.

I do it every time the room is empty. No matter what. I do everything that might need cleaning at that time. I don't want to ever have to clear out my area for something silly. The cleaner it is the less stress on the fan ----> more fresh air for the same amount of money.

Negative pressure already exists don't let dust make the fans work harder.

I wash mine monthly because my room is dusty as hell. It gets pretty dirty too. Same with my A/C filter.
