How to acquire this cure?

So i recieved some Agent Orange from a friend to hold me over until my crop is done curing.

Im really liking this stuff. My question is, every once and awhile id acquire some product from a good friend and it would be super dry. I actaully prefer the super dry stuff. I like when it break in my fingers to like power and has alot of keif and stuff falling off. I can tell it has Zero ( 0 ) moisture left in it.

How does one go about getting a cure like this? Is it just cured then left out to dry?

Im going to be ordering some agent orange seeds soon as i really like this stuff but just curious as how for any buds.

heres some pics to show. Nice and dense, breaks easily and becomes fairly powerdry with too much breaking.

Much love!

Thanks

A cure preserves moisture in weed also breaks down sugars and starches..If you want dried out weed just leave it out to dry...

I understand if i leave it out to dry itll get dry...

but this retains great flavor and scent. So i was questioning, is stuff like this usually cured properly first, then left out to dry , or is it just hung dry the whole time?

Has nice dense buds. looks like a semi trim job, as there is still soem sugar leaves poking out and such but are covered in keif.

Thanks for the response!

Curing is drying in a slow controlled way. Too hot, you lose flavor and potency. Too quick and you get that chlorophylly green taste. I usually set my dehum in the dry room to 65% humidity and takes about 10 days before I trim and jar. But relative humidity can be a little, hmmmm, complex. Temperature factors in, light will degrade the product as well. read read read. Also I remove all fan leaves before chopping and hanging, helps with the flavor.

What you described is what I call angel weed, and is what I look for.

Low starch is what causes it to break up like that. Zero moisture weed is the best way to smoke it imo, and when kief falls off the bone when dry, it's always a smooth smoke.

Starch in the final product causes it to smell like hay, and to be crunchy... like stale bread. It does not break up easily when it's high in starch. Weed that is low in starch does not go stale.

A lot of it is genetics, you should aim to have the plant metabolize the remaining starch during the dry and curing period. If done correctly, the majority of the bud starch will have been converted to sugars, respirated, and off-gased as CO2.

A few techniques I use in attempt to reduce starch:

1) harvest before the lights come on. A 12-24 hour darkness period ensures the plant has to use its stored energy during the night so you get a head start on the cure. Less food in the leaves and buds when you chop means less in the buds after a cure.

2) do not flush. Make sure the plant has enough nutrients to make it all the way to the end. There is a link between phosphorous deficiency and reduced metabolism, and promoted starch synthesis. Sufficient phosphorous levels inhibit starch buildups, so flushing/starving in the last week is counter-intuitive for improving taste. There is also a strong link between calcium deficiency and early senescence and bud rot.

3) make sure you do not jar too early. Even if you don't get mold, it will cut off the supply of oxygen. Most starch is burned during the drying period, so if it doesn't taste good when it goes into the jar, its potential is limited. See "curing is a myth" thread for debate on this.

starches or not, if it's bone dry it will crumble. You want to slowly dry to let those starches break down. I have found that after about a month in the jars and burped daily, at the right humidity it's smooth and flavorful, but if you dry fast like 3-5 days even if you re wet it, you won't get that flavor back. Crunchy like stale bread? Don't know what you mean by that. Go stale? Only way to keep herb from browning that I know of is to either freeze it or do the whole nitrogen storage displacing the oxygen. Freezing tends to destroy the flavor.

great input guys! thank you both! most drying/curing stickys do not get this in depth. they lead you to believe drying is quicker and then into jars and such.

Unfortunately i think my first run is slightly fucked due to such low humidity here ( average 20s in day and down to 0 around nite in my area ) so i didnt know about it being a MUST to keep the RH up so it dried each of my plants in about 4 days. They are still burping and pulling moisture out but we will see. it has the horrible chloropyll/stale-ish smell right now to most of em. Then when i let them burp and sit out for a bit they almost got too dry again but we will see as time goes on. Im using this as future info. Now i know that drying and curing is another month process where as most of my reading lead me to believe it would be about a week process. Some say once dry on outside and stems bend to jar them, and i see others talk about waiting up to 10 days before jaring.

1. I wouldnt say i flushed , but i only fed straight water from week 8 to end of 9 1/2 when i cut. by time i was ready for cut they had wilted most of their main fans and pulled all nutes from the other leaving most in that yellow tone/purple. they started doing this while feeding and being that they where random seeds, i figured they where telling me it was time to go water only and finish them off. ( all 4 also matured and showed sex by themselves after 30 days, unless they where autos and i didnt know )

2. always chopped when lights off was almost over. last 2 plants stayed in few ddays longer until my day off and they got 48hr darkness to see.

3. not sure if jarred to early. everything was dry on outside and stems bend not snap ( per ganjaluvrs sticky ) but my RH is like 25-35% here. Got a humidifier a bit to late in time.

Great info from both! Thanks guys!

I read in another thread about this and peeps all said that a long slow hang dry is the best way to get to a proper cure. Low temps like 50F+ ish, about 60%+ ish humidity for about 10 days if possible. I have low RH too and am thinking of buying a humidifier to replicate those numbers if I can. Jars are just a more controlled way of doing the same thing over time but a good hang dry really seals the deal during the "curing" process.

I live in an area that's really dry in the winter (15-25%).
After 24 - 36 hours hanging in the dark (until crisp on the outside, length of hang varies by bud size and starting moisture)
I lay everything in a shoe box (a hole at each end) until it feels 'wet' again
It goes back on the line until crisp and I might do that a couple times depending on how 'wet' it gets and how long that takes.
When it isn't getting real 'wet' in the shoe box anymore (I lift the lid pretty often to 'burp' out air and feel it), I cut it off the main stem.
From there it can go in the jar to be burped and occasionally laid out, but I have a smaller shoebox that does not have holes at the ends which holds in a little more air than the other box (you could put tape over any holes)
I use the smaller shoe box with the lid on to slowly release a little more moisture while not being air tight like a jar would be.

After the box (crispy, stem doesn't quite snap)
It's into the jars
and burped every 4-6 hours for 10 - 15 minutes (burped, not just opened. Jostle around, tap bottom of jar, settle contents, press down slightly, cap.)
until it smells right and the stems snap when I bend a bud.

Use Boveda packs ; you can get them in 62%, 69% RH, ect helps get a perfect cure, they are very cheap. make it easy for you

that sounds like a good method. I prefer using the moisture in the mj as the source. By containing the 'moist' MJ you can control the relative humidity (RH) until it gets to the point where being locked up in the jar is going to be productive. There are many ways to do this, mostly by blocking air flow and reducing area. Cigar humidors from your local cigar shop work great for monitoring the humidity of small spaces.

All this aside, be sure to read https://www.rollitup.org/t/a-perfect-cure-every-time.514841/page-22#post-11194340 , or at least the first page or two.

Once product is dry. place in jars (mason) a long with one pack - can open once a day for 1 week till desired cure. Buds will become hard and easy to break-up after cure along with taste improvment
