Well I basicaly just killed three plants. a super lemon haze a ak47 and a sharks breathe because I switched to a hps system from my large cfls and it looks like it cooked them.

I have a large garage cabinet that I converted into a grow box and I need some help cooling it. The budget is somewhat tight right now so any advice on how to do it and save a few bucks will be greatly apprecatied.

below is a picture of what I am working with.

you need ventilation my friend, maybe in the future after you sell some of your harvest you can invest in a 60w LED they dont produce heat and a 60w is about as effective as a 200w HID minus the heat.. but for now you might want to keep the doors open a few inches and point a large fan at it, that will keep a lot of the heat from staying trapped.

nice cab. you will like the results when you get that hps cooled. what size is it? i see you have an air coolable hood. hook up a 4 inch inline fan and filter (optional) to it and you should be fine you can find the fan/filter combo on ebay for about $120 or just the fan for about 80. youll also want to cut some holes in your cab; one around the top for exhaust and a few smaller ones around the bottom for passive intake. make sure you vent your exhaust far enough from your cab so the heat does not just recycle through you ventilation system. good luck.

A couple questions.

I found the fan you were talking about. I just want to make sure I understand before I order the wrong thing or mess something up.

The fan pulls from the cabin through the light via a duct to the outside of the cabin. Thus pulling the hot air out and also cooling the bulb at the same time?

If the air is being forced out of the cabin do I need another fan to replace the air?

I have a 400 watt hps.. Will this system suffice and keep my plants from frying?

Yes you have the idea now. You won't need an intake fan, passive intake will work just fine. If smell is not an issue (dont forget your only in veg, not stinky yet) then don't worry about a carbon filter. If it is an issue, your design will get a little more complex. I would buy an inline fan, they can get a little pricey but they are quality. If you DON'T need a carbon filter, just attach ducting to one side of the light and have it go through the inline fan and blow out of the cab. If you DO need a carbon filter, you have to hang it above the light, attach the inline fan to the carb filter, then run ducting from the inline fan through your light out the other side of the light and then continue ducting out of the cabinet. Both ways will cool your cabinet, one way will remove all smell with it, the other will not.

I was looking at this one on amazon..

I am not sure if it is a good model or not.
