start it inside in the spring .. when you still have a littel night frost .. use a CLF or two (23W 5000/6500K)

start it in april/may when you know night frost will be over soon (tho on a balcony in a pot you will be able to take it in doing the night)

get a nice 3-4 weeks seedling ready in a 1 gallon pot ..
then once summer hit for real (may/june) you repot it in to a 5 gallon pot and use the balcony insted of the window shelf/CLFs ..

keep it vegging june/july and untill your nights become longer then the days .. once that hapen it will begin to flower .. a week or two before that .. get it in a +7 gallon pot ..

need to get +5 hours of direct sun .. so place it in a spot/corner that get most sun .. also if the balcony is not withe then paint some pannels and place behind it at the wall for reflexion ..

I would also consider to Top/FIM it after 4 weeks or veg. to keep in low and wide .. so you get better yild with only one plant .. make it a bush insted of a high thin plant ..

The MG has slow release nutrients, so you won't need the fertilizer. Also it's not a good choice to start seeds or clones in that mix. The soil you have is designed for established plants. So pick up a bag of 'seed starting mix' and use that in your starter containers. One gallon to start off with is good, but then after three to four weeks, switch to the larger container and fill it with whatever potting soil you like.

I'd go a lot bigger then 5 gallon, but it also depends on how much floor space you have and how much weight the building can support. Usually anything under 15 gallons isn't worth my time and I don't like transplanting over and over. Just do it once and call it a day.

100 gallons in the form of a plastic kiddy pool would do you really well. A 3x3 or larger raised bed would be even better (roughly 200 gallons). You can buy any brand name potting soil to fill your container / raised bed. Even MG soil. Just remember, if the soil has fertilizer in it, don't add any extra for at least four months (and sometimes six months).

You'll need to know about your zone to know when to start planting. Check your local farmer's almanac for info on the best times. I'm in zone 8, so early march the best time for outside. But I like to get a head start by starting indoors in Feb. If I had better lights and more space I'd easily try and start in December or January indoors with the goal of trying to put a 3' to 4' plant outside come March.
