How to progress secularism

This is something that happened to me when I was at work. I was working with a Mexican resident at the time, a guy named Miguel. He's a great guy to work with, I've worked with him a few different times and he's taught me a lot, I totally respect the guy. Today we were working together and we started talking about religion. He asked me about my beliefs and I was honest about them. He asked me what "secularism" is. So I thought about it for a second and decided to kind of switch up the arguments and see how it goes.. Normally, I'd say something like "OK, so you believe in Jesus and Christianity, I don't, but secularism means that there is a separation of the church and the state, so everyone is free to practice whatever religion they want to, or none at all. Their beliefs aren't subject to legal consequences at the hand of the state.". This time, I just confined it to saying imagine you're a Christian in a Muslim country, secularism would simply mean that you would be freely able to practice whatever religion you wanted under something like an all Muslim mandate.

When you frame it in that way, every single Trump supporting Christian will agree with you

They will agree with you, yes, but you will seldom change their convictions because they don't appreciate the implications of their consent in relation to their own country. No, we must find common ground. The issues that Americans voting Trump face are by and large the same that every American faces or wil face very soon. We simply won't find a lasting solution with only 50 % of the electorate on board...
