How to put dirt in pots? Also watering help

Will be putting my rockwool starter cubes into soil tonight. I have some 1.6gallon square pots

Is there any secret to putting the dirt in them? The pots have 4 drainage holes on the bottom. So do I need to pack the dirt at the bottom or anything?

Do I literally just fill with dirt and throw my rockwool in the middle?


Also how much water do you give these things =O

we don;t want you to kill your plants either.

first, you should add some perlite to your soil, say 25% perlite.

second, the pot needs to drain water through those holes, so no, don;t pack them. some people put rocks at the bottom of the pots to hold in the soil and improve drainage.

third, water you plants until a little flows from the drainage holes. then wait until the soil is dry down an inch, and repeat

If i don't put rocks will soil just constantly leak out of the pots?

maybe a little but not enough to worry about.

also, i dont know if this is true or not, but i was told NOT to drown the medium after you transplant your cubes into the soil. You want your roots to search for the moisture

Fill up with pots, don't pack the soil in and just stick your fingers in to make the hole for the cube. Just place the cube in, gently push it down and cover over with soil. They will leak so make sure you have them on a tray or something. I water mine well, till it leaks out the bottom when putting the cubes in. Then let it dry almost right out before next water.

Well hopefully I'll be giving is a test tomorrow. Waiting on my pots to show up at the freaken local hydro store =O
