How well do HTG fan and filter combos work against smell?

Hey all,

Looking into what fan / filter combo I'll be getting and came across the HTG fan / filter / speed control combo. I'm only growing for personal medical use so only like 2-3 plants max in a 2x4x5 tent, but I can't have it smelling up the place since family or friends sometimes stop over.

I'm looking at the 6" fan/filter combo from HTG if anyone has personal experience with them.

How loud would you say it is in a room with a closed door?
It is kind of loud. I have mine in the basement and u do not hear it in the house, but as soon as u open the basement door, u def kno it is on! I did use that blue foam insulation board on the outside of my cab only on the side that the fan is on and it def helped with some of the noise. I would compare the sound with a a/c unit when basement door is opened.

HTG is one of the few shops I can not endorse. I tried them for a couple years. yeah they can be cheap but most of their stuff is garbage. Alot of it is retagged chinees made junk. Their bulbs are the absolute worse I have ever used they burn out way to soon and their digital ballasts are junk. you get what you pay for in electronics and HTC is not one I buy from anymore. many friends and fellow grows had to deal with broken stuff or wait to try and get replacements.

I actually had good on htg supply on eBay store. All my stuff I bought here still works. I'm on grow 6 used it for 5 solid grows and it still works. I upgraded though and bought from a different supplier cause I wanted a phantom and they didn't have it.

Glad it worked out for you. I know personally in 3 years trying their stuff I went through 20 plus bulbs 4 ballasts, got 4 shattered cool tubes, had 3 mogul sockets go bad and 2 water pumps die in under 3 months use. I stopped as it was getting hard to get any reply from the owner for replacement.

It works. A little loud. I got the tallboy... Ironically I wish I would have gotten the smaller one to fit in the tent better. The tallboy is like 2 feet long. Ended up replacing the filter with a 4x12 phresh filter. Once in awhile with the HTG i get a wiff... it gets like 95% of the smell while the new phresh filter is getting like 98-99% of the smell. Also using Apple crumble ONA block placed at the exhaust of the tent. Also have a saucer with water at the exhaust... the moving air over the saucer of water ups the humidity of my grow room like 10%..

As for controlling the sound I have the fan ducted outside the tent wrapped in bedding (insulation). if I need to quiet the fan I stuff a rolled up piece of carbon prefilter in the exhaust ducting... don't roll it up too much or you won't get any airflow.. Also use some rolled up carbon prefilter to fill some of the duct ports instead of closing them... this way the negative pressure is there but barely. before too much resistance is on the tent the filters will be able to allow some pressure/air to get into the tent if needed.

I would suggest running a fan controller. I like it because if I have company I can turn it down to quiet down the noise. Also if I smoke or trim in my tent room the smell gets filtered out due to being sucking into the intake of the tent and blown back out through the carbon filter....

almost every fan/filter combo you find online are mismatched.

Meaning you really need a bigger filter than the fans outlet to breathe right.

They don't tell you this but it is true. SO for a 6" fan you really should get a 8" filter.....and so on.

Your fan will not only be quieter but the filter will work more efficiently and last longer.
