hps ballast problem please help

hi there i was given a 250w external hp sodium light which worked and when i moved the light upstairs i tried it a few days later and the ballast is clicking very quietly and not lighting the bulb
can anyone give me some advice please

p.s i can take pictures if required

is the ballast digital? what brand is it? how long has it been used for? more info is more bettter

man that thing looks like its got some hours on it i dont know whats worng with it but it might not be the ballast. the bulb could be bad and the noise could be the ballest trying to fire a buld that burned out. just a thought

if you go poking around in there remember, the ballast will have residual electricity in it and could really hurt you.

yeh it could be the bulb but it worked fine the day b4 and i was told when they die the explode but i know nothing thats why i`m asking lol
i wont be putting my fingers anywhere near the wires
i am low on cash and dont want to buy a bulb if the ballast has died vice versa
how can you find out which is dead ???

make sure the bulb is seated well in the socket and plug it in. see what happens. do it again w/o the bulb, any difference?

get a voltmeter with all the opitions and check the watts in the wires
