HPS bulb runs great, MH bulb starts to light, then dies. (Second MH bulb doing same.)

I picked up a cheap kit to get started, and start dialing in my space, with some bagseed while the good beans are in the mail.

I ordered this Vivosun kit from ebay and have it hooked to it's own circuit in the grow room. It's running off it's own 20amp breaker, which should be more than enough to run two of these kits.

It's a switchable ballast, from 400w, 600w, 1000w, and a "Super Lumens" setting.

The HPS bulb warms up in under 10 seconds, and burns bright and strong. The MH starts to warm up, get's a nice blue glow going, then browns out and shuts off in under 10 seconds. The ballast seems to stay on, fans running, and with the first bulb I left it run for about 5 minutes to see if anything changed - it didn't.

From what I've been reading, this is the opposite of what usually happens. My understanding is that a HPS bulb takes more juice to ignite, so if that is running smoothly, I don't see (from my uneducated PoV) how this could be anything but bad luck on two bulbs... It seems like it WANTS to kick on though, so I'm stumped.

I haven't done any hot restarts, minimum 15 minutes between re-firing, usually around 30 minutes, and the bulb is cucumber cool.

I checked the screws inside the socket, and they were all snug.

I managed to squeeze a finger in the socket, and made sure the tab wasn't pushed down too far or anything. I moved it a ball hair, and notice a bit of a tighter fit with both bulbs, but no change in results.

Vivosun's ebay store has been helpful so far (even though there have been 3 or 4 hiccups with the order so far) and they had another bulb shipped the day after I sent pics and video of what was happening. I've emailed them again, and offered to return both MH bulbs (if they will agree to pay shipping) so they know I'm not trying to scam bulbs. The videos I just took are of the MH failing, and the HPS starting and shining from the same ballast, same everything.

Any ideas on what this could be?

The rest of my short term budget is earmarked for getting my airflow where it needs to be, so I'd like to avoid having to grab another light to get me by while I process this return. The HPS seems to be doing a good job, and I have a blurple that is blowing my mind for how well it's doing. The ladies are LOVING that thing!

My goal is to start gathering materials for an LED strip fixture I'd like to build, but I'd still like to keep this ballast running in the room.

Sorry for the novel, thanks for the advice so far! I haven't grown in several years, and never anything this ambitious, but I don't know how I managed to sleep on this place for so long. I'm a long time shroomery/growery/GC member, and I've been spending hours here pouring through threads, it's nice to have reading to catch up on!

Here's a quick clip of the light, I missed the first half a second, but it starts as bright as it does in the clip, for all intents and purposes the clip shows the full sequence.

Electronic ballasts have circuitry that is designed to detect if the lamp fails to fire up properly or if it burns out. The ballast then stops sending voltage to the lamp. So it could be a faulty ballast provided it was intended to work with a MH lamp.

Also make sure that you don't operate a MH lamp in the vertical orientation, most of them are designed for horizontal only.

I am operating them at the correct setting. Both bulbs are rated at 1000w. I've only been using them horizontally, as well.

The ebay listing has this on the page:

Dimmable Electronic Digital Ballast:

1. VIVOSUN Digital Ballast Dimmable at 4 Phases for maximum efficiency; Up to 30% more lumens than magnetic ballasts for improved yields.
Manual Dimmable Phases:
1000W - Super Lumens (110%), 1000W, 750W, 600W
600W - Super Lumens (110%), 600W, 400W, 250W
400W - Super Lumens (110%), 400W, 250W, 150W
2. Strike both high pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) bulbs, Compatible with Double-Ended lamps.
3. Compatible with 120V and 240V power supplies (include an 8ft 120V cord); High frequency output results in
less power loss (50/60Hz Frequency), 99% Power factor.
4. Fast lamp ignition by lighting up the bulbs within 2-3 mins, consistent and stable light output by constant
lamp voltage for ultra bright, high intensity and quality spectrums.
5. Premium quality internal fan minimizes ballast temperature, ensures all ballast components are kept cool.
6. Exclusive Technologies:
(1) Soft Start - Allows multiple ballasts to start at the same time.
(2) Slow Light Start-up - A healthy way to light up the bulb and reduces risks of premature failure.
7. CE certified and UL listed; 3-year No Hassle Warranty.

Number 4, and 6(2) are sticking out now that I'm re-reading.

I left the first bulb on powered for 5 minutes and it never kicked back on, but I didn't try that with the second bulb. Is it worth letting it sit powered on for awhile? How long is long enough?

Well I have some nanolux 1kW DE CMH ballasts that will restrike and eventually get an arc but it only waits like 60 seconds to retry.

If you have to leave it on longer to strike an arc then somethings wrong as that wouldn't be acceptable.

Did the lamp come with the ballast as a set? What brand and model is the MH lamp?

The bulb and ballast are both Vivosun brand, sold together in this kit:

I got the 1000w kit.

I can't get a clear model number by zooming into the listing. I can check the actual box when I check on the ladies tomorrow.

It doesn't capture well on camera, but the bulb ignites just as well as the HPS, it just doesn't want to seem to stay on...

Still haven't had a reply from the seller, but I expect one by the end of the day.

I've tried the ballast in more than one circuit in the room, and both with and without the included timer.

HPS bulb doesn't seem to mind any configuration, and I put it on the same circuit as an 850cfm exhaust fan and there was no noticeable difference in HPS performance (the fan chugged a few rpms, those 2 appliances should only be drawing 13.5amps max, both rounded up, but I plugged the light into the fan's usual outlet box, which runs on a 15 amp breaker, so I was cutting that a bit close.)

My Solis Tek ballasts like a "break" when switching bulb type. I literally have to unplug them for at least an hour before they will fire a different kind of bulb. Irritating.

I have same light except 400w. My mh some times takes several min. to come on, but hps fires right up. Interested if others have same issue, may be cheap bulbs!

I run vivosun and ipower ballasts. My 2 cents. The Ipower seems built better. I'll stick to them from now on.
I know from reviews they both have some quality issues, but once you get your hands on a decent one they seem to get the job done.

I do prefer the Vivosun tents and HPS bulbs though. Both good companies. Always gonna have some bad apples when you make a million products I guess.

Hope you figure it out.
Best of luck!

Yeah, I make sure they're cool before swapping bulbs, or turning them back on. When I tried it again last night it was probably a 3hr cooldown.

I have the LEDs on 24 right now, but I had the HPS running 18/6, so i caught it during the off hours.

@southend When it takes a few minutes to come on, does it ever seem to engage when you plug it in at first, like my video up there?

From the moment I plug it in it starts to ignite, then browns out. Does yours do that as well, or is it doing something a bit different?

Vivosun's ebay store is still being really cool, so I'm gonna give another bulb one more shot, then look at exchanging the whole kit maybe.
I don't have another MH that I know works, and with this covid stuff going on I don't have anywhere I could take these MH bulbs to test them in another setup.

I'll update if anything changes.

Dude buy a Hortilux they have been top dog in the single ended 1000w hps market for a long time; price is very reasonable now, i see them as low as 65$ all the time.

My local shop even sells them for 65$

No it doesn’t just go out,but takes long time to ignite.

no mine doesn’t go out, just takes long time to ignite. Thinking of getting different bulb just for backup.
