HPS Help!! 400 watt HTG supply vs 400 watt HydroFarm DayStar

I am looking for a bit of input on which hps would be best to go with. Right now I am looking at getting set up with one from HTG supply. It is selling on Ebay for about 265.00 with shipping and comes with a digital ballast, and a 6" Euro hood and all the other stuff in the usual package.

Another option I just found in my local classifieds is the Hydrofarm daystar which has an asking price of 180.00 The hood is not set up for inline fans and just has a vent on the side of the hood. (It is supposed to be very cool running though) It has been used for around five months and the bulb is on the way out.

I am looking to grow in an enclosed space of 2.0 x 2.5 x 5.0
Thanks for the input and let me know if any additional information is needed!

ahhh ur grow area is only 2ftx2.5x5???? if that is right then u dont need no 400w HPS that is overkill by like 250w cause i have growbox that is 3ft wide by 4ft tall and only have a 150w HPS that cost me 50bucks.

A 400 watt is going to put out a good amount of heat. I am a newbie, but i was surprised at the amount of light and the problem I had dealing with the heat in a 8x8 room. Just my 2 cents. I purchased a 400 watt unit on Ebay from that same seller, it was a great deal.

The only options for me are the 250 and the 400 since I may be making a bigger grow space and don't want to have to upgrade. The 250 and the 400 are both about the same price and since I'll only have it on 12/12 (have another setup for veg) it should not draw that much power. Where did you get your 150 for so cheap?

If you are only growing in a space that small and plan no upgrades, all you need is a 150. I have been told the best way to tell is 50watts per square foot. In a space that small you better have hella ventilation for a 400 watter.

If 50 watts/ft2 is what is suggested, the 150 would only allow a 3 ft2 area. My space is 2.0x2.5x5.0 so i have 5 ft2. According to the above advice minimum lighting would be a 250 watt fixture:confused:

Also I will most likely be doing a SCROG setup. Looking to put in about six different girls. Does this tech usually require more or less lumens/watt?

if you have good enough ventalation like cool tubes or a cooled reflector hood i dont see a problem with a 400 watt hps. iv got one in my flower room that is 20"w x 31"d x 42"h and i put a cool tube around it and the temp stays right at 73 with good venting.

Thanks fshields,

I had considered the cool tube but was wondering if this space would still heat up from the magnetic ballast if the tube was a sealed system
The HTG supply system has a digital ballast and the other is the magnetic style. How much louder and hotter would the magnetic one be?

the 400 watt hps i have is from htg supply but it isnt the digital, its the remote magnetic so i am able to locate it just outside my room and it helps a lot hith heat. and as far as noise goes i dont even hear it even when my closet doors are open

One thing to consider too is that you don't want to buy used equipment if at all possible. My HTG 600 has worked GREAT.... 'sides, if it fucks up they will send you free replacement and then some.

If you are going scrog, you likely don't need a 400 for your space.

I got mine off Ebay. It has a internal Ballast so its cheaper. Its expose to be a Floodlight. But i made into a growlight. Doesnt put of to much heat its only 150w and can easily be cooled with a little computer fan. FloydFanx6 was using 2 150w interenal Ballast lights for his flowering. The same light i got.

The magnetic ballast is sturdy enough and can be separated - i got a street light for 20 bucks from craigslist and then split and cooled it for a grow box 35inX29inX69in.. seems to have a perfect wide-range effect, like you could put it closer, or much farther away to cover a large space, and it still does as affective.. outside other could-be factors, of course..
