So i got a 400w hps setup for flowering. I went to plug in the ballast this morning to end the 12 hrs dark cycle from last night and the hps bulb wouldnt turn on, id buy another one but i barely got this setup like a month or two ago, so im afraid it might not be the bulb, any suggestions on what to do?

so are you not using a timer? is it magnetic or digital ballast? do you feel or hear the ballast operating? is bulb cord plugged in completely? is there a reset button or resettable breaker on the ballast? have you tried a different outlet circuit?

No timer, it is a lumatek dimmable ballast, it never made noise or anything to determine when it was on and i never felt itbefore but it doesnt seem to be vibrating or anything. the bulb is completely plugged in and there is no reset button i can see. And yes ive tried different outlets

make sure the bulb is screwed in tight enough, check your connections. also was it a used bulb, does the bulb look burned out ? a new bulb would be cheaper than a ballast, if not the bulb, it must be the ballast or the outlet/wiring of the building

nip down to your nearest hydroponic shop and get them to test it for you, this ballast has an internal ignitor that ignites the hps bulb so it could be faulty, if it is the bulb then you can buy a new one right away, if not, then claim a ballast under warranty or buy another.
metal halide bulbs have the ignitors built in and you can hear them clicking at lights on.
a metal halide ballast will not work with an hps bulb as there is no ignitor in the ballast or the bulb, but an hps ballast will work with a metal halide bulb as it does not matter if there are 2 ignitors, one in the ballast and one in the bulb.

there are magnetic ballasts that do both mh and hps and magnetic ballast that do only hps, most if not all digital ballasts will fire both. but useless here in that he jas a digital that fires both.
