noway 400w hps all the way but i would recommend that u use a 600w if you can Envirolights take ages for the plant to grow im talking from experience if you want nice big bushy plants in no time at all get an hps. envirolite is extremely painstaking slow form my experience with hps. i prefer to start my plants lives off with the enviro then when they are about 2 maybe 3 weeks old put them under my 400w hps. put it this way 400w hps if u want to have fun cheers wizard1612

it depends on your method of growing. despite what wizard says a 400 hps will not be any faster unless you are growing the plants too big for the cfls. if you are then your doing it wrong. you need to match the height of the plats with the intensity of the lights. the light from a 250w cfl isnt intense enough past a foot so having a plant over a foot will be a waste of vegging time. with a 400w hps it twice that. so having a plant shorter than 2ft will be a waste of light. a 2ft plant will take longer to grow than a 1ft plant. but will yield more

in fact if wizard grew his plants for 2-3 weeks under an a cfl like he says he would need to flower them then. if he grew them any bigger with a 400w they would be too tall for the cfl anyway and it would be wasting veg time so he isnt saving any time with the 400hps.

if your height is low and surface area large then cfls are more likely to be more efficient but if your height is tall and your surface area is small a 400w hps would be the way

400 watts of HID lighting will trump 500 watts of fluorescent in any situation IMO. The only thing that might be considered is whether or not you can properly ventilate.
