HTG 400w Original Grow Tent Kit.

I want to first let everyone know who contributed to this forum, thank you so much for all the wealth of information available, this forum rocks! <3

Hello guys, im new on rollitup and this is my first post, I've read numerous threads before deciding to purchase my equipment to start my first grow.

The kit I purchased was the HTG 400w original grow kit from HTG supply

I upgraded the stock reflector to an easy cool 6 and also bought an mH conversion bulb for vegetation.

My question is what is the best and cheapest option to properly setup the air circulation and ventilation for my tent.

The tent dimensions are 39" X 39" X 79" and the stock fan that came with the kit was a 6 inch inline duct fan rated at 160 cfm.
There is also a 6 inch clip on fan to circulate air from inside for the plants.

I was wondering what other equipment do i need, should i run duct work from both sides of the Easy cool 6 reflector and have the duct fan blow air from outside to cool the light? or should I just use the duct fan as an exhaust to vent out hot air from the top of the grow tent. Sorry I am a complete noob in this scene and I would truly appreciate any help/advice.


Also, I'm planning to place this tent in the kitchen with no access to the outside, would heat be an issue if I just had the fans running and the duct work just leading out to a section of the kitchen?

also, the kit came with a sunrise hi-low hanger that supports up to 13 lbs. Is that strong enough for the reflector? thanks...

Should always pull away from the light, as pushing will allow heat from the light to stay in the tent via possible leaks. Pull air from inside the tent and light, to create a negative pressure in the tent, with passive intakes for fresh air replacement. Don't forget to look into a carbon scrubber if smell is going to be a concern.

Edit: I would also do a few cycles through the tent (lights on and off fans on and off), watching temps and humidity in the tent for each phase. Get it all dialed in before starting plants, rather than while do so, to avoid issues.

The thing with the easy cool 6 is that it has 2 openings for duct work on both ends, do i have the fan pull air out of the light, but how should I pull air from tent since the reflector is it's own compartment. Do i need 2 more fans? one to pull clean air from outside and another to pull out of the tent? im trying to find out the best way to vent with the least amount of fans required... sorry im such a noob, its hard to explain well

Correct. Mainly if smell is an issue, and you are cleaning the air. The other end of the reflector could either suck air from the tent into it, across the bulb and out, with passive intake, it creates a vacuum drawing in fresh air. If you duct from outside the tent to the bulb, across it and out, you will still need fresh air brought in. It is all dependant on yur needs. The first mentioned way, again, would be best suited for a carbon filter setup. The later, for moderate to severe heat issues, although it would draw out alot of the heat the first setup as well.

a room based on your size, according to the math, would need a 36cfm fan to swap out air in about a minute, so your is deffinately sufficient. Adding ducting and or a scrubber would mean a higher cfm fan.

oooo ok, that definitely cleared up a lot of questions i had about extra fans, great link. thanks again ^_^. ill setup the grow tent by this weekend and take some pictures, hopefully itll turn out alright, my first grow was a failed experiment following a tutorial using a styrofoam icebox + cfls.

help! my grow tent setup is completed but after test running it for an hour, the temperature was 87 degrees and still climbing. It was also night time with temperatures around 74F outside. I have duct work running to the top with the fan blowing air out of the tent. And also a fan clipped to the top to help air circulation. I have a 4inch hole on bottom as a passive intake. What should i do? please help =( how should i setup up the grow tent more efficiently? i attached pictures to display my setup..

The exhaust fan you have isn't going to cut it. Those are normally for an intake duct. You need a high velocity inline fan with a variable controller on it so you can fine tune it.

You can buy a 6" to 4" flange.

you need to have both ends of the light reflector hooked up to ducting pull air in from outside the tent then exhaust it out dont worry about pulling fresh air in the tent just open it once or twice a day. And i highly recommend buying Exhale a cheap co2 alternative. Google it.

damn shit, i was hoping that was the only fan i needed since grumpy said a tent that size only requires a very low cfm rated fan... is there any other alternatives or do i need to purchase a better fan to lower the temps. thanks for the heads up and advice given so far. if i purchase that high velocity fan, what should i do for intake? just use the old 6 inch fan as an intake? cuz i only got a 4inch vent hole on bottom...

I would have it pull the air through. I have the exact same reflector and thats what i do. I would position the fan close to the reflector for less drag.

also im not sure of the power of your inline but if you ever want to upgrade you can get a Tjernlund M6, i kno wierd name its japanese, off of ebay for like 75 bucks and its quiet and very powerful 530cfm

Also, i was wondering about passive intake... how do you allow for passive intake without letting light in? do i just attach a feet or two of duct work and bend it so light doesnt enter?

My bad for not clicking the link to see it was an inline fan and just going off the cfm. Keep in mind that the heat vented out is going to warm the rooms air temp too.... Better yet, seeing how I use a room and not a tent, I'll step off. Maybe the same rules don't apply to tents as rooms. Sorry if you thought I mislead you.

Lol i originally thought that im still a relative noob but the more i buy for my grow the more things i come across that everyone says will make a world of difference thus im always spending money here and there on little odds and end things. and to answer your question yes you can use the ducting to do the passive intake really letting a little light in wont hurt much

Light doesn't bend but it does reflect... I know about the fan cause that's how I started with one of those cheap duct "booster" fans. They don't work. And I'm surprised they sold you a Cool 6 instead of a Cool 4. You don't need an intake fan. The exhaust fan will pull through your intake opening. I would put the inline fan that I suggested on it and suck the air out of the tent through the light fixture to cool the light. I assume the ballast is not in the tent. I have a bigger grow room now but have the fan fine tuned to a temp range of 70* to 78*. And I use a carbon filter to eliminate the massive odor my girls put out.
