Hey Folks!
So I was at a dispensary that I have a working relationship with earlier today. We got onto the topic of breeding and crossing of strains. Now I have always been lead to believe that the way to properly make crosses of ganja, is to find a strong male plant with desirable characteristics, and a female plant with desirable characteristics. From there either collect the male pollen, or to simply put a boy and a girl in a separate room, and let them breed via air circulation. from there collect the seeds, find the phenos, and then begin the back crossing process to start it all over again.
Now heres where the confusion begins. These people were talking about how there is a difference between a cross bred strain and a "hybridized" strain. Saying that the way they have always "hybridized" a strain is quite different. So they would take, for instance, a Big Bud plant that they wanted to hybrid with an afghani plant. They would take one of the two plants( Big Bud or Afghani) and surround them by the ones they wanted it to hybridize with. Thus creating a different strain?! huh?
Now I have personally seen my plants take on characteristics of other strains simply because they were grown right next to each other. Which is kinda weird, but it never changed the smoke or made the weed any different, I would just see similar growth patterns and leaf patterns. I never thought that, that particular plant was now "hybridized".
I have personally never cross bred anything. I aways grow from clone or seed, but never purposely do any breeding (hermies do it sometimes on their own )
I don't think these folks knew what they were talking about but I could be wrong. Any of you breeders out there have any input? Thanks
