hyprid light system: combining HPS and LED lights for 4x4 grow tent - seeking advice

hello,

Is it possible to create a hybrid light system by combiming a 400watt (HPS) light with a newly purchased 260W LED light for 4x4 grow tent ?
i would like to know your advice on this setup and how to plan it correctly since this is my first run.

do you already have the 400watt hps? if you do than i see no problem with adding the 260watt led light too your 4x4 i honestly think you will get killer yields with these 2 lights in a 4x4 :)
if you dont have the 400watt hps than i would recommend a 315watt CMH

Thank you for your response, my friend's generosity in giving me his old grow setup and finding a brand new HID light has inspired me to take the leap and combine both HID and LED lights. Instead of purchasing a new light, I am excited to make use of the HIP light I already have. Although I'm not sure what to expect in terms of yield, I hope that this setup will result in a decent harvest. Being a first-time grower, there is some uncertainty, but I am determined to plan carefully and provide the necessary care to achieve successful results. Here's to hoping that the hybrid light system will contribute to a bountiful harvest!

my brother used too grow with a 1000watt hps lights in a 4x4 grow tent with 4 plants and he would yield 500-600 grams of dry nug. so if your using a 260 watt led and a 400watt hps light i would say you are going too get a minimum of 300 grams people say you can yield a gram per watt using led's so maybe you will get 400 grams ++ i dont know honestly good luck mate

based on your brother's experience, it's reasonable to expect a yield of around 300 grams or potentially more.
Is it just me thinking that 300g out this set plus Advance nutrients set is a shame or I'm just being greedy

Raise your lights to the top of the tent.
the problem this will bring is your 400w hps isn‘t really strong enough to be at the top of a 78” tent.
It‘ll work, but is not ideal.

Putting 2 marginal lights in a space is not equal to one good light.
Now if you’d propose this idea with a 6’ tall 3x3, I’d say that would be about perfect.

may i ask why he needs too raise lights too top of tent? he has 260 watt led and 400 watt hps. i own a 240watt led panel and i keep my panel like 8 or 10 inches away from my tops at all times if his 400 watt hps is air cooled he can keep his lights pretty close too the tops of his buds! but if his hps is not air cooled than yeah you gotta keep it farther away :) im on my first grow so sorry if i ask dumb questions lmfao

I know at 2000 ppfd the cost to benefit lowers so I guess if you have good nutrients, root zone health, increased co2, etc etc then i say yeah. Just know more light means the plant needs higher levels of each factor that makes up the growth and flower of the plant.

my response was only in relation to the question “how do I get even light coverage of the canopy”. The OP would do that by increasing the height of their lights. Which unfortunately requires more powerful lights to offset the increased height to maintain the same ppfd. The other alternative is to buy a bar style led with wall to wall bar coverage, but OP wants to use what he has.

I agree, those particular lights can be run closer to the plants, but you lose the even coverage for the whole tent. Good question though.

You would better off not going into your first grow wonder how much you will yield but rather how much will you learn from it. You can do fine with those lights are they the best for that space probably not but they will work and they aren’t the worst either. Same with the nutrients they aren’t the best or the worst. Keep the whole grow as simple as possible and don’t over love them to death. Also don’t over feed less is more in growing till you learn how to read the plants. Remember it’s about learning from each thing you try and before you know it you will be cranking out some killer buds. Good luck. There is lots of good info on here so read read and read some more. Search feature is your friend

Yes, but for the best coverage, I suggest using smaller 70 or 100 watt HPS bulbs. Use four of them, spaced apart between the LEDs. I find the mini bulbs on sale at walmart for really cheap sometimes(MH and HPS Brinks brand), but the mini ballasts are kind of expensive to get. If you want to do it right, and have good even coverage, that is the way to go IMO. The small HID bulbs don't over power the LED, so they can be at the same height. They even make mini CMH bulbs. I think the ultimate light fixture would have one of each type of grow lighting ever made, and include almost every part of the spectrum, lol.
