I do I know when my plants are two weeks from harvest

7-14 days before harvest is when you flush. Some people say flushing does nothing. It's up to you on deciding what you do. I believe in a good dry and cure, even though flushing is recommended more often than not.

And don't go by days of growing as every plant is unique. Your plant may go 12 weeks instead of 8 for it to be fully ripe, if you don't wait, you won't get good results. "grow with your eyes"

Well most people take them down early, you want a good 75% cloudy 25% ambering for it to be really ripe. Some people like to let the plant continue to mature and start dying since it is seasonal. So it again comes down to personal preference. But I would recommend you to let it get to that 50/50 amber/cloudy then take it down. I enjoy strong potent buds, so I naturally let it go longer.

It is your first grow so you might not time everything exactly, but this is what I personally aim for. I don't flush because I am outdoors using miracle grow and it's physically impossible to do so, but I like to water a week before harvest. So you don't need to let them "dry out" just time it so you're harvesting when you'd be watering them next

Generally speaking, for Indica strains you should harvest once most trichomes are cloudy, and maybe a few are amber. With sativa strains, it's best to harvest while a few trichomes are still clear; it won't be quite as potent, but the sativa effects will be more pronounced, and imho more enjoyable. Good luck
