Tilray Launches New Industry Association & Code of Ethics for Canadian Medical Cannabis Producers
Dear ,
Our priority is to always keep you, our patients, informed, so today we are announcing that we’ve terminated our relationship with the Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association (CMCIA). We made this decision after several unsuccessful attempts to persuade the CMCIA to adopt a Code of Ethics that would, among other things, prohibit Licensed Producers (LPs) from paying kickbacks to physicians in exchange for issuing medical documents and/or referring patients.
The practice of providing physicians with financial incentives for patient authorizations and referrals is a violation of the professional standards by which physicians must abide, as accepting kickbacks is clearly prohibited by provincial Colleges of Physicians. We believe it is critical that patients be free to choose whichever LP they feel best meets their needs, and we also believe that such a choice is best made through dialogue between a patient and his or her physician about the best medical cannabis strain for that patient’s individual medical need in the absence of any financial influence or incentive.
We are tremendously disappointed to end our relationship with the CMCIA, but we have lost confidence in the association’s ability to effectively define and enforce standards of behaviour for our industry. By failing to adopt a Code of Ethics that mandates a verifiable commitment to safety, transparency and avoidance of conflicts of interest, the CMCIA is failing to serve the best interests of Canada’s medical cannabis patients.
As a result, we’ve established the Canadian Medical Cannabis Council (CMCC), an association that represents Licensed Producers and others who are committed to building long-term trust with patients by ensuring the highest standards of ethical behaviour across the entire medical cannabis supply chain, including interactions between LPs and physicians. The CMCC’s Code of Ethics, which reflects a long-term commitment and accountability to patients, is based on six fundamental values: safety, integrity, quality, access, security and research. You can learn more about the CMCC at http://www.medicalcannabiscouncil.ca/
We appreciate you choosing Tilray as your LP, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to integrity in every interaction with physicians and patients, as well as to providing our patients with the best product and customer service. If you have any questions, please contact our dedicated customer support team, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-844-TILRAY1 (845-7291) or [email protected]
Thanks,
Greg Engel
