so the other day i was going for a bike ride. i passed this intersection and i look down and crossing the road i see 2 baby skunks. at first i was afraid to get close because i thought they could spray, but all they did was stomp on the ground. then a guy drives by and says theyve been there for 2 days. then a state boy drives by and moves them 3 feet off the road. he leave and then a minute later theyre in the road. then, redneck guys drive up and get out. they tell me all about how theyre orphans and how skunks make great pets. i brought one home. we got it milk to drink and it slizzurped it up. i researched and found out skunks carry rabies and that they dont make good pets unless theyre bought at a store. so the next day i called a wildlife rehab to have them take it in, even though i wanted to keep it. it seemed like the right thing to do. the guy took the skunk and said they would have to do a rabies test. i got a call that today telling me it was negative, but they unfortunately had to kill it and cut its head off.

Rabies is a disease that attacks the nervous system (a.k.a. Brain and Spinal cord) and the only way to test for it is to kill the animal and test samples of brain and spinal matter.

Most wildlife agencies don't actually care about wildlife.
this is true. they could've quarantined but that would take too long so they killed it. and the state park wildlife agent who moved them to the side of the road obviously didnt care if they died or not because he didnt make any actual effort to relocate them.

Unless someone was bit they wouldn't of bothered testing for it.

They killed it just to kill it.

they killed it because skunks are a rabies vector species. it never bit anyone, its teeth were practically nonexistent. they killed it because rabies can remain dormant without showing symptoms for a while, although im sure there was some way to keep it alive. but the good news is that i dont have rabies and niether do the other babies. im going to try to find the rednecks so i can take another one and i will attempt to release it into the wild.
