I Grow Chronic / 600 HPS / MH, how close to seedlings? Don't wanna fry em!

Hi, this is my first post on here, looks like there are some proper experienced growers posting... Sorry for the basic questions, gotta start somewhere! Having finally got my shit together, i've started getting some kit together for a grow. I got a SJ 120 tent with 1x 600w HPS ECOLITE, is it alright to swap the 600 HPS bulb for a 600 MH for the veg stage? Also what is the ideal hight of the light above for young seedlings, as I don't wanna fry em... Also I heard that Fox Farm nutrients are pretty good, but seem to be difficult to get in UK, what are the best alternatives? Any help would be much appreciated... I just watched a grow film "I Grow Chronic", has anyone else seen this flick?, is the info in it legit? I was gonna sprout my seeds like the dude in the show does... Any help would be much appreciated... Cheers

Hi, If ur ballast can use MH then yes u can,
i would keep the light atleast 30inches to start with,
a good place to start with soil and nutes would be canna's range or advanced nutes
and sorry i havent seen "I grow chronic" :)
Good luck

EDIT: also do u have good ventilation? gonna need it with 600w HPS

17 inches, anybody who tells you they need special treatment is a noob, seeds sprout in full sunlight outdoors.

Thanks for the info... So would I be right in thinking I could Veg under the 600 HPS, 18/6, then once the plants are ready for flowering just change the nutrients and swap to a 12/12 light cycle? I don't intend to clone or keep a mother, so a good yield is high up on the list. Vent wise I was thinking this:

Hopefully this should cool the tent down enough... I don't think 600 HPS is excessive for a SJ 120 from what I have read. I just took the carpets up / turned of the RADs in the attic room where the grow is gonna be, hopefully the dip in ambient temperature should also give it a nudge in the right direction... So the 17 inch height should be good for veg & flowering stages, nice one for the chart... Anyone else had good results with canna nutrients? Cool

yes just change the nutes and lights to 12/12, i've used canna terra soil and nutes and have good results

Edit: you can get this for the same price: LINK

so youve linked him a fan with half the available air flow for the same price? good on ya!

ebay fan:
Flow rating = 790 m3/hr

other site: Flow rating = 342 m3/hr

no matter which fan you get make sure you grab a fan speed controller, as your fan going full tilt could cause more harm than good. ive had issues where if my fan was up higher than low/med it would end up cycling air too fast and overworking my AC... as for the bulbs, just get an enhanced spectrum and you would be fine. as for the dual arc bulbs, i thought they were supposed to be better in both stages of growth. in flower its supposed to help frost. me personally i just use enhanced hps's and call it a day.

Nice one for the heads up on controlling fan speed... That wasn't to high on my list... So you rekon the ebay fan is all good? Where can I get speed a controller, or do some vent systems have them in-built? Cheers

Why would he need a fan that big for his tent??? and i wonder what the quality of that carbon filter is like compared to the rhino pro carbon filter with the fan i linked?

ebay fans are fine, a fan speed controller you can find on ebay for about 20 quid for a mechanical one, and probably about 60 quid for one with a temperature based control. if you buy the one that just controls in mechanically, you should plan on spending a day monitoring it at different speeds to see how it effects your temp... some situations you may need it going full tilt, or slightly less... if your ambient air is cool, and youre using an AC unit you may need it cranked down so youre not overworking your AC, thats how i found i needed it down at like 20-35% or so and got a 10F drop in temp...
