Here's a tip I learned - when I kill a moose (Deer, Caribou, Bear etc...) I butcher the meat into muscle groups - do not just willy nilly start chopping. Follow the seams and then pack it in ice in chest's - I've kept meat over 2 weeks like this just draining water & adding ice.
It really helps relax & wash the blood and hair off the meat.

Not the end-all best way, just the way I do it.

do you add salt to aid in blooding?

none of that shit is necessary. i got a 30-30 for my 4th bd. killed a dear, and learned from pops 'you kill it, you clean it'. first was a fumble effort, he wanted me to get dirty and fuck it up, so id pay attention and learn from the next.

love the winch tech though. fully skinned in 15 seconds, six preliminary cuts.

i quarter them out too, heart liver and kidneys go to the dogs. intestines and other for the pigs.

believe you, it was just crazy from going from a 200lb midwestern buck deer to seeing a beast like that! and i know it was small compared to westerns. i saw a cow (moose) from your way that was larger than the buck i saw in minn...

@GreatwhiteNorth , i've tanned a few hides, but the hair always falls out. i never researched it, but wanted to know if you have any tips to keep fur healthy on a hide? skins come out great, but the hair just falls out...?

All the hides I've ever done I had commercially tanned. There's a tannery in Anchorage that I uses when necessary.
One of the tricks is to flesh the hide as soon as & salt the shit out of it & roll it up or freeze it until you can get it there.
If it warms up unsalted the hair will start slipping.

my gf lives up in maine, i've bee driving up to about midcoast now for idk, 8 years or so.. i've yet to see my first moose, it's a big mission of mine, so of course thus far they've been awol.. the only ones i've seen so far were out in front of the cabella's store we went and visited, that me and the gf sat on and took pictures of.. a big steel thing. oh yeah, they have another big steel statue at the one rest stop.. i've been so bummed over not seeing one yet..
my gf said the first one she saw when she moved up was on i95 of all places..
