all my blow outs keep cracking. i'm making them too thick. this one looks really nice, but it has a HUGE crack in it.

I like the blue one.Cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors.I was wondering if you can use scrap glass? Because you live in California, and on the beaches, there's a lot of "sea glass", which is just old glass bottles, etc that have been tumbled by the ocean.People pay a LOT fro that stuff.And if you could make a pipe out of authentic "sea glass,"I bet you would make quite a bit.But I'm not telling you what to do, just thinking aloud.

I know, right? I hunt agates, and they're worth money, too.My mom has buckets of them. My family used to be big bottle diggers back in the day.People pay a LOT for old whiskey and medicine bottles. Lucky you, bottles from California seem to go for a bit more.

if someone had a big enough kiln they may be able to fix that. :-| :shock:

Looks like a clean break. It wouldn't be hard to fix. Maybe you could find a local glass blower and ask what they'd charge.


The sea glass is a nice idea, but I doubt it would work. It's totally incompatible with the boro glass that we use to make pipes - it could be annealed all day long, but would just shatter in the end. I've tried messing around with scraps of various soft glass in the past... with a normal flame it shatters immediately, and even the smallest flame totally fries the stuff.

FDD: your progress is impressive - great work. I've been doing it professionally for about ten yrs., and cringe to think back on what I was doing in my first few months... definitely nothing as nice as you're doing.
