Sooo how should I hang my HPS into a ceiling when I cant find a beam? Also, how far away from the plants should the HPS be? It is a 400w if that makes a difference...

haha was thinking about doing that but I dont want all that shit falling onto my plants.... Fuck it, guess ill get a ladder and go to town haha

There has to be a ceiling joist in your vicinity. If you can find 2 joists somewhere near where you want to hang the light, get a 1"X4" long enough to span the distance. Secured to both joists with 2" screws. Now you can hang the light where it's needed. You don't have to center it. The light and reflector weigh less than 25lbs. Hope this helps. :eyesmoke:

If you can't find the stud, there are also little plastic hangers that go into the plaster, and then you put your screw into that. One of my lights is hung this way - it's very secure.

Personally, I never trust those plastic things with much weight, or anything important. Just my opinion. I'd go with a board spanning two joists. Once you find one, the other joists should be spaced 18" apart from each other... though in an old house you might find 24" spacing (mine's 100 yrs. old, and has that).

Also, I made mine so I can adjust the height as plants get taller...
You'll need:
Two hooks (threads on one side, hook on the other).
A pulley.
Some small nylon rope.
A few feet of small chain.
(You can get all of the above at a hardware store. It's all inexpensive. Check the weight limits for the rope and chain, and don't get anything much bigger than you need.)

Put one hook in the board spanning the joists.
Put the other one on a wall around shoulder level.
Tie the rope to your hood.
Hang the pulley on the ceiling hook.
Run the free end of the rope through the pulley.
Tie the other end of the rope to a few feet of chain.
Hook the chain to the hook on the wall - It should give you three feet of height adjustment, depending on which part of the chain you hook on.

Hopefully that makes sense. It's easier than it might sound, and it works out great.
I can get a picture if you want.

Haha thank you all bout the replies, I did alot of work on the grow room today haha. I did what the first person said and found two studs, Im using Eye hooks into the studs, Zip tie to chain, zip tie to light, max limit on the zip ties is 75lb so I figured I should be alright... ajusting the light can be a bitch tho... I might just go with the pully idea. Probably the best...

I also switched to ebb & flow today, Hope I did it right, I think I did tho... Tomorrow I needa run out to the hydro shop and grab some more hydroton pellets aaaaaand hopefully find some light pullies, that would be sweet... OH! how far away from the canopy does the 400W HPS have to be?

yep, same problem here. Can't use a stud finder well. It goes off constantly when I am trying to use it. Can't figure out why?

That's what I have done in the past. I got these heavy duty drywall anchors at lowes. They look like white screws with heavy deep threads. They are hollow in the center to screw a hook or other screw into.
