I need help with germinating.

Can somebody please post a full step by step tutorial from germinating to planting? I believe I will be using Black Golds seed starting mix. I am nervous and do not want to mess this up. How do you start your seed, when should the first transplant be? when should the first "feeding" be? How often should I water etc...

Thank you for your time.

buy jiffy pellets.
soak jiffy pellets in water.
put seed in jiffy pellet.
put jiffy pellets under some kind of dome
put small CFL over dome.

grow pot.
Jiffy pellets are great seed starters because they're really loose. Rockwool doesnt give the seeds much mobility incase they pop the wrong way and need to re orient themselves.

dont do the papertowel method. dont handle the taproot.

Jiffy pellet - inexpensive? What kind of tray do you use for them?

You can just invert a tupperware container. All the dome needs to do is trap moisture and raise humidity. For a tray, you can use anything. You can even use nothing. Jiffy pellets should be able to sit upright without a problem.

Cheap? Cheapest and most reliable thing you can get. box of 30 shouldn't cost more than a few bucks a home depot. Try to make sure you but the "Jiffy" brand, though. I've bought off-brand peat pots and OSH and they were garbage. Also more expensive..

[h=1]Germinating Marijuana Seeds[/h]Before you begin the germination process, you should spend some time looking at what seeds you want to grow. Many factors will determine this, not least your own preference. For help choosing marijuana seeds, look in our Marijuana Strains Selection and our Cannabis Cup Winners page.
An important part of marijuana cultivation is germinating your seeds properly. There are several different methods to seed germination. The method I am about to show you is one which is simple and can work well.

First, get a paper towel. Soak it in warm distilled water, then ring out all the excess water that you can. Soak the seeds in the same distilled water for a half hour (you can soak up to around 12 hours). Lay the seeds spaced out on one half of the paper towel. Fold the paper towel over the seeds. Place the seeds / paper towel on a plate. Place a bowl upside down over the setup to maintain moisture and reduce light.

[h=2]Germinating Marijuana Seeds With Rockwool[/h]A better way to germinate marijuana is to use grow plugs. Like what you would with cloning, they are a bit bigger than 1 inch 2.5cm squared. You push the seed in, wet it, and it usually works, leave it wet, not flooded, but never completely dry. This part is important especially if you just shelled out on seeds. Wait until roots start to appear through the bottom. Plant them. We always use fluoros but other lights can be used not too near, at least 1/2 meter (1 1/2 feet). Keep damp (important). If the grow plug dries out, your marijuana seeds will be wasted and you will have to begin the whole germination process again.
[h=2]Germinating Marijuana with cotton wool[/h]In approximately 2 days you should see a crack. Your germination stage is then complete.
The other popular method when germinating marijuana is to use simple cotten wool, this is again kept damp pretty much in the same way as the above method and kept in a dish. It is really the same method just using cotton wool. When the seeds begin to sprout you can transplant into a pot using tweezers.
To give you a better idea on how to germinate, look at these germinating marijuana seeds pictures.
[h=2]Important[/h]Never touch the seeds with your hands after you begin germinating, always use tweezers.
[h=2]Remember[/h]Once germination is complete, always remember to place the seeds sprout down.

Each seed is started in one gallon fabric grow bags (e.g. Smart Pots) filled with a sterilized potting mix specifically designed for seed germination (Miracle Gro Seed Starting Mix, Fox Farm Light Warrior, etc). Once the containers are filled to the top I gently water until I see run off. At this point they usually sink down a bit, so I'll refill with more potting mix and water, then I place them to the side to drain for a few minutes.

While this is going on, I take my seeds and soak them for 5 minutes. Some will float, some will sink, all will be sowed. Once the soaking is done, I place them on a paper towel and dust them with mycorrhizae inoculant (only if they'll be transplanted outside into the garden). Once dusted they are ready to sow.

To sow them, I use a pen or pencil to poke a hole that's roughly 1/2" deep. I drop the seed, then pinch the hole closed. Followed by a quick and light misting.

I immediately place them under my lights (in photo above I'm using a single 200W 5600K CFL with a Hydrofarm Hood which has been raised to take the picture), which I leave on for 24 hours straight until they pop, lightly misting as needed, but just enough to wet the first 1/2" of potting soil.

Once the seedlings pop, I set my light's timer to 18hr on and 6hrs off and stop misting. From this point on I only water when the container feels 50% lighter. After the third week from sprouting, I'll begin the hardening off process and by the fourth week they are transplanted outside into the garden.

I love this method. I never lose a seed because of rot, my stems never come out lanky or starving for light, and my roots establish themselves much faster then if they were per-germinated and transplanted (e.g. paper towel method). I also avoid domes or raising humidity because in my experience, more often then not it creates mold.

what mix would you use? My local hydro store suggesting using black gold seedling mix for starting seeds. I like your method a lot

Do not use the paper towel method, ill give you an example of why not to..... One time seeds were germinated in a paper towel, but one of the seeds had very good genetics than the others, and her root was literally coming through the paper towel. Long story short I ended up losing her because transplanting her into my grow plug was a bitch, the delicate little root had broken when putting her into the grow plug, and she never regained consciousness. I think about that girl everyday.... anyways...

What you need to do is plant the seed with the POINTY END DOWN. The pointy end is always where the root springs out from.

Why would you have broken the root? If that were to happen to me I would take the paper towel and cut around the root very gently and as small as I could and try to avoid damaging the root

Good tip there. I use the paper towel method so I'll have to remember that.
