i got an idea (trailer park boys) to make a "green" bin out of a green bin (a garbage type bin) im fairly handy and i already have one half build but now im having second thoughts... what i have done is taken a green bin installed a bright daylight clf in the top and cut holes in three of sides and am installing computer fans for ventilation... i plan on making 3-4 but i am also planing on digging them into the ground about 7/8th of the way in so they stick out 6 inches or so but still have the fans above ground that way i can hopefully have a 3 foot plant underground, but this is all in theory because i have yet to try it and i do not want to to sink any more money into it before i know it will work please give me your thoughts

If your planning on growing with CFL's then you need to plan on adding more as she grows. 3000lumens per/ft2. with the ideal amount between 7000 and 10,000. The CFL that you have is perfect for vegging though. 5000k-7000k is in the blue spectrum("cool"/"daylight") and ideal for vegetative growth(root, stem, and leaf growth). while bulbs <3000k are in the white/red spectrum, and ideal for the flowering phase(budding). But it is a necessity to have a dual-spectrum throughout the entire grow. For example i use a 3:1 ratio with 6500k daylight bulbs being the majority during veg, and 2700k bulbs being the majority during flowering. CFLs also lose a signifigant amount of lumens more then a few inches away so plan to adjust your lights daily. As for growing underground i cant give accurate response to, but in my opinion as long as there is no problem controlling temps during your grow season i dont see any problem with it. Well aside from the inconvenience. It would be pretty difficult trying to train or reach any lower branches.

I'll be honest. I think you'd be wasting money if you sunk more into this idea. These bins will buried in the ground, outside? What if it rains, won't it fry the fans and light, or even flood the bin? Someone could easily find them, considering they'd be suspicious if spotted. I don't know if I'm seeing it right, but seems like a failure in the making. Good luck in your future grows. I'd go Guerrilla if I were you, start scouting now, so you now what the foliage looks like when it's fully grown.

I'm not trying to be a dick, just calling it like I see it.

Psssst....Check out my journal

unless he was able to hide or disguise it. if you cant stop people from seeing it, then change the way they see it. be creative. Also what type of soil will you be using? Nutes?

Maybe... What about cutting the bottom out of the bin and letting the plants root naturally in the dirt (hiding it among other trash cans for example) and using the bin to hide the plant and lighting equip? If you placed it up against the side of a house the intake/exhaust vents could be totally hidden and the odor from the other trash should provide a good measure of cammoflage. Plus, by not having a container in the bin, you could get 12 more inches of growth. Just a thought.
