I think I've cooked my seedlings

I germinated 8 seeds and on saturday there, I put them in soil. There in down about 1/2 inch, with clear plastic over them. The grow is in a closet about 5ft long/2ft wide/and 2.5m tall. I have a 400w light on them, and thought the room temp was fine, however when I put a finger in the soil to test moisture it is actually quite hot!. So they have been in there about 3 days and havent come through the soil yet. I think Ive cooked em!! If so, is there anything I can do?? I have already moved the light way up off them.

Take off the plastic and pray. They should be up in a day or two, and if not, probably never.

how hot is hot? seedlings like it warm and moist. if you did cook them - nothing you can do - but if the temp is reasonable - give them some time to sprout before doing anything drastic.

well the temp in the room is about 32. I know thats slighly too hot anyway, but the soil feels a lot hotter than that. Will taking the plastic off help that much with heat??

The plastic traps heat. Literally, the greenhouse effect.

I personally wouldn't put them under HID lighting till they are at least a few inches tall anyway. Then keep the light a few feet away minimum, and slowly lower it as they adjust.

Get your temp. under control or it's not worth trying.

get the damn plastic off, step away from the plastic! no, really, plants need air, by placing plastic over the dirt, you are trapping in gases that they normally expell into the air. and they can't breathe! Let me cover your face with plastic and see how you like it:mrgreen: keep themabout 1-2' away from (shit, you said hid's right) HID's keep a fan on them to help wiith heat water lightly and leave them alone.

Ouch. you may be too late. what I do after they sprout is put them in a tim hortons or dunkin donuts cappucino plastic cup . They have a large opening at the top & act as a mini green house with normal window sunlight until the little buggers are standing by themselves :o

Too late indeed my friend. I dug them up today and there all dead. Oh well, it was my first attempt, cant expect it to go smoothly first time. Im quite sure it was having the light too close that killed them. I'll make sum adjustments to my set up and try again. Those coffe cups, are you talking about the ones with the dome lid??????

Yea the light was your main problem. And I wouldn't recommend the clear plastic unless you know the humidity in the room is particularly low (dry).
