Hello fellow Stoners. Alright I live in Alberta Canada and I am sick of buying pot, I decided that I will start growing it again. (I used to grow outdoors and indoors so I am not an idiot when it comes to growing)

I want to do a small grow in my attic nothing huge 2-4 plants. Making the grow box will not be the issue, my issue is electricity. I am a beginner when it comes to the Romex cable and knowing about it. I will post 5 pics to show what I am talking about.

So basically I need to make an outlet box and then I need to install an outlet so I can hookup my lights and what not. Problem is I have no idea where to make the cut for the Romex cable. Please if I am a total idiot and I am missing a step or something correct me, I need to learn that is what I am trying to do, gather info so I don't fuck up.

So Il show you some pics of my attic and you can see the romex cable that I am talking about.

Obviously there must be a reason your growing in the attic right? Unless you have a great ventialtion system and grow box, I think you may encounter bug and mold issues...Is that insulation or what is all that crap?

No mold issues because my house is 2 years old, I have never seen a bug in there, it is fairly hard for them to get in. And yes that is all just insulation nothing els, I will move it aside later when I actually start building my grow box, i am just so confused with the romex cables.

Just get an electrician to run a cable for a number of "attic flourscent strips" (cheap enough job depending on your house) off a 30amp breaker at your main box. Just tell him you want heavy cable used "just incase" and then when its all said and done, switch off the breaker, cut the cable off the light (if you even bother for authenticity or whatever) and install an outlet yourself (simple job). Its the lazy option, costs a little bit, but means you avoid possibly killing yourself/wrecking your house and you'll have a professional job done at least.

If the humidity is too high, mold will spring up like it's nobodies business.

figure out what the cables are connecting to some of them are electricity for light bulbs which are on a switch so if that switch is not turned on you wont get any electricity. basically all you have to do is cut one of the those wires somewhere and get one of the outlet metal box (don't know what their called) and connect both sides to the outlet. You can buy it at canadian tire or home depot or lowes or whatever in the world you have in alberta. Its actually fairly easy. though you may need some electrical tape and those cable twists for electrical wires (they look like a cone and you put the two wires in there twisted and then you just twist the cone).

Yeah humidity should not be a problem though because I will be growing in the winter where it will be drier. I will use a heating device don't worry.

Thanks man that's EXACTLY the reply I needed, respect. So basically I can cut anywhere I want? How can I find out if they are electricity for light bulbs? I read 300volts on one of the wires could that mean that its not for a light bulb, since light bulbs obviously do not use 300volts.

Grabbing a wire in the middle of a run is not a good practice. Sure you could cut the wire put a junction box in and pull yourself off an outlet but then you have to worry what is down end of the wire. If it goes to to something like the outlet where your microwave is or the bathroom where a hairdrier is, then your grow space will lose power everytime you throw the breaker from overloading it. If it is before a switch on the way to a light then every time the switch is thrown it would lose power.

ALso you may get a answer faster posting on this thread with your electrical questions, I believe the are answered by actual electricians :)

Not to mention it can be quite humorous reading about the millions of ways people try to electricute themselves.....

That's why I told him to get an electrician to run a cable up to there, then he could just use that cable (from a new breaker on the mains) for an outlet, the lights thing was just an excuse to get an electrician to lay the cable for him.

He could still pull his own wire I would just chase it back to a box and see if there is enough room left of the breaker it is connected to. If there is enough power, pull youself an always hot line from the box and put it to a metal junction box with an outlet. I you put in a double gang box you would put in a switch and an outlet for emergencies.

When I say box I mean a recepticle, whether it chases back to an outleft or a switch. Best is always gonna be pulling a new line from the main breaker box to your grow and putting in a large enough gauge wire and breaker to support your grow. You are limited by total number of amps your main breaker box, or service, is rated for.
