I am not a fan of Perlite. This is not a bog plant. It detests constant access to water. It must drain completely. Mixing perlite and coir is like mixing butter with motor oil. Why?

So, to me you are working against yourself. This is a thread for Coco as the main, inert, fully draining media. Inert media is so we can feed everyday. With that mix I am sure you cannot and don't intent to.

I don't think you get what Coir is for. :)

So mixing them doesn't benefit me at all?

I like to put couple inches perlite in bottom of fabric pot! I like 70 coco/30 perlite but def! couple inches bottom! I use cocogro 5kg. Wash it till its clear then run 5ml grow and 2.5ml calmag per gal to set cations! MY opinion! just way I doit and never have def! And then run em hard! Run ph 5.6 -6.0 fluctuate. Keep it in good range for magnesium.

bump. post#1 good info.

"Coco is essentially a hydro system. The biggest mistake we made, and we made every mistake there was, was to insist on treating it like soil. You'll be tempted we know. It seems wrong to water everyday till you get 10-15% runoff. Do it anyway."

This is spot on in my opinion, everything the author said I agree 100%. If you notice your plant turning yellow or growing real slow thats the first sign of too much salt in your coco. I flushed mine out three times and still had too much salt.

Just stumbled upon this thread and read every word like it was gospel. It's great to see the thread evolve and people learn from each other over like 10+ years.

I'm using rehydrated coco-peat with around 30% perlite. Using a locally made nutrient mix called hydromino, it's cheap and seems to do the trick just fine but didn't water daily with run off and fell into the trap of treating it like soil.
