If I cannot afford a root stimulator (Roots excel, GH Start) what should I use?

If you insist on using a stimulator, find a willow. It's totally FREE.

Although I tend to eventually kill my weed, I've had great succeess in every rooting attempt, except this one time, when I tried to root a dead clone.
Aparently, no amount of THC in your brain gives you resurrection powers. But at least I can say I tried.
