I find it a tad bizarre this thread is titled "IF you are new to LED and want help choosing what to buy, POST HERE!".

But it seems if you cant afford the latest and greatest cob/diy kit (that seems to be what is being pushed here, pretty much every off the shelf light I have seen posted, or posted is apparently just not up to the job) then there is no advice. Surely there are other led lights that fit the purpose even if it is on a smaller/budget scale?.

Personally, I am a beginner grower and cant justify spending a great deal of money e.g. more than I would spend on a second hand car on a light to grow one or two plants.

So if you had a budget of say £200, not really bothered about getting maximum yield, don't sit there tweaking every aspect of your tent on a daily basis, literally want to fire, feed and forget on daily basis is there nothing on the market off the shelf for that?.

P.S I watched all the COB videos on utube being reference and learned a great deal, I have also read loads on the light spectrum's (with often conflicting information) but still find myself at loss in purchasing a second light. I currently have the much hated mars hydro so have nothing to compare it too but the simple fact of the matter is, it works and the plant is growing. I know it is not the best thing on the market but surely there has to be something within my £200 budget? (which is four times what I paid for the mars).

Hey buddy, asking the same question over and over again isn't going to change the answer, just the amount of politeness with which it's delivered.

EVEN IF YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND BOLDED THE ANSWER WON'T CHANGE, JUST PEOPLE'S OPINION OF YOUR INTELLIGENCE.

Yeah I read your answer, it was about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, the formatting is just what it was when I copied and pasted the title from the thread, but as you are super intelligent, you already know that I guess.

Everything is funnier bolded and capped my friend. I am smart enough to know that.

My original answer is a correct answer, you just don't like it or understand it.

Stated plainly, a cheap led costs more and is less efficient than a regular old HID, so they aren't actually useful in any way. More money, more heat. Pointless.

For less expensive options, especially in the EU region, I would recommend the Hans panel. They may fit your budget

Thank you puffenuff for a constructive reply, was starting to wonder if I would get one. I will check out the panel. If you were to compare it to a mars hydro would you say it is Hans down a better unit? (pun intended ).
Yes, I would say it is Hans down (I see what you did there) a better unit. Better chips are being used in the Hans panels. More efficient and more reliable

I am also on europe and probably will be going with one of each from this guys. Their cheaper light is good enough for 1/2 plants my friend and cost 320€ (£250).

Hello guys,

i want to plant autoflowers with led, i was thinking 100 w per plant.

Can i use 3590 running around 100w?? I only see 50w threads. Or for running high w is better vero 29 and 3070? if they are better, what is the correct temperature for flowering? 3500k also?

Thanks a lot,

Important Safety note for the new LED growers... Your gonna need new glasses to! Your HPS and MH glasses probably won't work correctly and possibly jeopardize your safety. GrowSafe

I said earlier in the thread this thread didn't help me but I was wrong after learning more and rereading the later pages I have learned a lot. Thanks to those whom have contributed and to those to which the questions were answered for.

Johnson vs Amare

So I spoke with both reps regarding their new lights coming out to cover my 5x9 tent.

Johnson:
"We should have a few maximizers in stock in roughly 2-3 weeks. The Maximizer is the CXB-8 with a bigger driver. They are both dimmable and for the small price difference is definitely worth the small extra cost per fixture. The CXB-8 utilizes 2 smaller drivers that are roughly 91-92% efficient. The maximizer uses a driver that is 95%+. So what this equates to is the maximizer is within 2% efficiency of the CXB-8 when both are @100%. So what this amounts to is if you dimmed the maximizer to 440 Watts you'd have more light than the CXB-8 at 440 Watts. I hope this doesn't confuse you to much. The maximizer is a DE replacement and the CXB-8 it's an SE replacement basically. I can maybe do a small discount to bring the maximizer to within $50 of the CXB-8."

Amare:
"Thank you for your interest and inquiry in our HI-LEDs. For a 5' x 9' we recommend 2 x SolarPro900(Pro9).
Designed for commercial applications specifically to replace a Gavita DE for a 5'x5' footprint. It features top-bin CREE CXB3590 COB and CREE monochrome 5w XP-G2/XP-E2, powered by Meanwell drivers @~900w. Our patented removable reflector lenses array delivers maximum coverage and intensity enabling it to generate
astonish par intensity that is up to more than 2x the par intensity of a 1000w DE @24" and an incredible 4x by 48". (Please see attached par tables and 1000w comparison.) Note: the lenses are designed for high-bay applications that need ~48" for the overlapping to maximize coverage and intensity within the recommended footprint of 5' x 5'. The Pro9 MSRP@1995 and the Pro9IC MSRP@2095. We are currently offering -25% special for this month making the price $1496.25 and $1571.25, respectively."

Any preference?

:arrow:Johnson has got a ducted air-cooled hood & the CX9 are kickass so CX8 & maximiser should be too.
im voting for J :peace:

Between the two I'd take the Johnson. Why do you ask ?

Because amare refuses to tell us how much light is actually produced by the unit. The amare may very well be a good light and may even grow better and more efficiently than the Johnson. But refusal to publish one of the most important specifications for a light raises my eyebrows, which is really nasty as I'm an old mad scientist.

another aspect is the amare has crappy distribution, needs to be raised high like a highbay light to get reasonable even coverage, removing the lens helps, but so does removing the lens on a spectrum king.
