yes same same, running this cut going on 7 years now.

lol yeah 15 cob vs 1 de no match.but you said 16 cob vs 2 de would be in the cobs favor.i dont think it would be with 2 de in a 4 x 8 but maybe.i do know that setup you advised of 16 cobs x 2800ma would be at least double the price if not triple lol.thats why i said might as well grab 2 de and be done with it
Didn't mean to say that. 8 cobs, I wouldn't be confident enough to say ,would prevail in a 4x4.

BUT you'd be changing VERY EXPENSIVE DE BULBS, every 2 harvests, pulling more electricity from the wall, and needing ac and cooltubes.

ok just stop, sometimes you just dont know the answer to shit and you keep going haha.you can run de lamps for a year before replacing and mine are about 16 months now and still kickin the shit out of my newer 600hps.plus you dont run cool tubes with de.you would be surprised how easy it is to cool a de setup, bare bulb but the design allows heat to rise up and removal is simple as a 6in fan pulling air from the ceiling on low speed.im running mine in an open floor space but i imagine the photons would be bouncing all fucking over the place in a 4 x 8 with 2 x 750w de.

and if you think 1500w of cobs in a tent will be cool i think you should set it up and show me the numbers.i think you will still have 1500w of lighting to cool in that tent lol

see the thing with cobs is you DONT need them to run @ 2800ma to be effective.the whole advantage of cob is the lower power runs like 1050ma or 1400ma,now put 16 x 1400ma cob in the tent at 800w now you got great coverage for shorter plants, full tent and much lower power usage while still hitting high photons like the 2 x de would be. maybe you back off that 2800ma statement lol

15 cobs in a 4x5 would fuckin DESTROY a DE.
And your pretty positive? Even though the DE foot print would be 4x6? I know you like showing that funny graph with the cobs vs The DE. But I assure you the DE doesn't grow like your graph shows. The outter edges and bottom branching is all the same as the top. There is no larf. Well that was my experience with the DE. So i recently started with this piece of shit in the pic. Now will this beat my DE set up? I still got to do some more shit to this fucker and is why I'm posting in the new to led thread, really because I'm new. SO yes it will destroy my DE?

I counted 15 chips.
Would that be too much for 4x8?
How does 12 sound? So that I can use 3 hlg185c1400 drivers, one for each set of 4 cobs.
600W over 32 sq ft?

All this dick waving and nobody has bothered to tell you to stop thinking in terms of number of chips and start thinking in terms of PAR watts, PPF, watts, lumens, PPFD, etc. Literally any unit you are comfortable working with except number of chips. Figure out how much light you want, and work backwards from there. The basics.

600/32 is 18.75W per square foot, Inhale deeply, does that smell right?

I know how cobs work lol. It'd be hot no doubt.and you're right, I did not know DE needs bulb changes only every 1+ year.

Wanting to go with a 4x4' or 4x8' tent. Could I use 8 cxb3590 for 16 sqft, aka the 4x4'?
Could I use 16 cxb3590 for the 4x8'?
Get a 4'x8' Apollo tent. They're only like $150-$170 & do a great job imo. The more space, the better. If you wanna use half, it's super easy. You get a piece of panda film, 6.5'x 6', put sticky velcro on the outside feet of it width wise, and the other velcro on the edges of the 4'marks, and just wrap it around the poles that are in the center supporting the 8' side, and stick it! Make sense?

Hi guys pretty new to the forum and after some advice. I have a 2.4 x 2.4 x 2 Meter Grow Cube tent i been running with four 600 HPS and an 8inch Mix Flow Fan for a fair time and I'm constantly fighting heat temp and this is my main reason for looking to change up from HPS to LED in the hope it will combat the heat and produced the same to heavier yields Im getting around 50-60oz per grow. Can anyone tell me what lights I would need to hit temp of 28 degrees ( I run my lights 24/0 for my autos) and to hit around 75oz per grow ( which around 13 weeks ) are there any LED that can do this i read a little and some people are claiming there LED give off the same heat as HPS ?

Alright, im running 8 x 3590's for the first time,

Im still sitting on the fence after my 600 watt hps growing era of 20 years.

3590s , so far my observations are faster plant healing?, i dropped the 15 kg light on a plant, split it in half, and it healed within a few hours, fucken unbelievable... but as im using potassium silicate heavily for the first time, makes results more difficult to assign to the cobs re: stem strength. i think its more the silicate than the lights?.

over all lumen/lux light meter is on par with the previous phillips pia hps (in my opinion the best hps grow bulb is Phillips)

but with a better spread of light via the 8 cobs . (pls don't tell me about par efficiency unless your a true believer in blurple)

The problem with blurple or any par light, great in theory (well?) ...but you cant get the ideal intensity most of the time from 5 watt leds or less at their spacings....

Spectrum .. is dead today ... compared to lumens per watt.

Simply because we pay for power and efficiency matters. coloured cobs are miles too far behind in efficiency and most importantly intensity , not because they couldn't make them.. but the market is limited.

Currently white leds(blues) are so efficient lumens per watt in out put per power consumption/ cost , they still beat the par targets blurple lights put out by a lot.20160803_190525.jpg 20160804_223634.jpg
Humans see Lumens /lux, but plants aren't blind to the lumen spectrum, they been around longer than humans by a long shot.

This is a drunken, stoned ramble.. lol

anyway

im worried about 3590, doesn't seem to be building my bud sites as well as the hps but early days.. 2nd - 3week after flip.

Spectrum will never die! Spectrum not spiketrum like blurple. Lumens really are for humans and weighted to reflect sensitivity of our eyes. Plants don't have eyes. Plants use light in a whole different way. Parts of the spectrum that are important to them do not match up to the weighted measurements of lumens.

I so despise blurple.

of course my friend ,the exact spectrum of day light from the sun is basically the same spectrum as the most efficient light emitting diodes today , i dont think thats a mistake by nature.... i think its a earth given rule/formula. if another colour was more efficient the earth would have taken it on, in the mixing of gasses that is the sun.

I wonder if led would be more ideal than 2-600w hps for an al b. fuct type sog grow on a 3x6 flood tray and if so what kind/brand led?... the thing thats sucks is i would have to buy 2 for the tray and thats a lot of money because id only want top of the line led's

You guys do know a DE will easily put out 2 pounds right? Never-mind what it could do in a tent. Never seen one in a tent. Probobly ridiculous to keep cool.
When is someone going to do a side by side w/ 16 cobs vs a 1200 DE?
Allota talk about people building HPS destroyers & enialators, but no proof yet aside from data-sheets.
Someone's gotta do the comparison w/ all this talk going around.
Every other DIY is an HPS destroyer. I can't tell.

Hello Peargrow, I would suggest first of all that a larger fan would be a good idea. I run a top quality 8" in a 2.4 x 1.2 (3 x 600w hps) and previous to that a 2m x 2m. I have to use cool tubes to maintain reasonable temps. I don't live in a hot country!
Secondly nobody can tell you what kind of light you need or wattage to achieve 28degrees because the temp is directly related to your ambient temps. There will be a calculation somewhere to work out the heat rise from ambient temps but Christ knows I do not know the Math involved.
Lastly Cheap LEDs are less efficient in a lot of cases than HPS so they produce more heat per watt. To beat HPS you would want to purchase or build a unit using highly efficient diodes. The most popular way to do this at the moment is to use Cree Cobs, the most popular of these is the CXB3590 in 3500kelvin. There are other brands such as Citizen or Bridgelux Veros. These are not cheap, you get what you pay for.
There are companies who advertise on here who sell pre built lights or kits to build your own and spare parts. Hopefully @BM9AGS can slap up a list of good companies as I know he has that info or knows which page it is on.
If you cant afford to spend that kind of cash then stick with your hps, I suspect you can afford it if you are harvesting 50-60 oz.
The most efficient Cob lights are around 64% which is the reverse of what you are using now. You can build a unit to achieve this but it requires more cobs ran softer so cost more to build. Because of the efficiency you can build a fixture to match what you are achieving with your HPS and have a lot less heat or you can increase your photons and outperform the HPS and still beat the HPS heat issues you are having.

Good luck on your journey to LED lighting. Take time to read more about efficiency and check out everyones Cob grows by using the search bar. Check out some youtube vids, you can start with growmau5, he has some great educational vids.

I'm in the works the light I just made pulls 609w from the wall and 2 of them will destroy Gavita. I took my light over to Hydro Galaxy and they were amazed. I'm making 2 more so I'll have 1800w to play with and I get a lb from 400w so do the math
