Why buying LED lights are different from HID, flourescent, and other established technology

The thing with the market for LED lights is that they have only recently become affordable for our purposes. They're still so new that the "cutting edge" moves extremely fast! what this can mean is that prices can vary wildly, between brand new tech and older stuff for example. At first it is very confusing, as what you think you "know" could become outdated due to advances in technology or cheaper production. Things that were expensive could become cheap, making you think you have a great deal, when in reality it is because there is some even newer technology which does the job better. For this reason, it's important to seek up-to-date info when making a purchase.

Another difference is that no-one has solidly decided what the "best" LED light, or light colour is. People, and plants have their own personal preference. ;) This gives you even more reason to seek a wide variety of sources of information. One of the best ways to do this is simply to take your finger off the post button, sit back and roll a joint, and have a click through some of the threads and grow journals that take your interest. You'd be suprised how much you will learn from conversations that seem to have nothing to do with the topic. :bigjoint:

Again... Read grow journals! lots of experienced growers try out the latest tech here. You might answer your question just by reading, and have pictures of the results too!

And remember, the search button is your friend!

// going to stop for now.. I intend to add a DIY vs retail explanation next.If you guys have contributions please fire away, either pm or post here and i will edit them into this post.
Thanks for starting this thread. I haven't done much investigation but feel it's the wave of the future. I'm looking at Lush Lighting. Have you heard of those?

They use false advertising and numbers. When they first came out they got banned off a few forums quickly. I actually just called them this morning and they won't tell what "cree" chip they are using. They told me they use 10 different crees and 2 of them are custom...ya right. If they were using that many cree's even without lenses their par numbers would be higher.

I have conversed online, on the phone, and at the HT cup with them...I would not give them my money. Just another reseller. They are promoted by CC at the cups so they have got some attention. Wonder what those growers at kushington farms would do if they had some better led's. Also Farmerjohnfourtwenty just mentioned them...probably saw them at the cup. I hope he really looks into led's instead of endorsing this junk.

They only do 900umol@12"...not a lot but enough...but then they recommend hanging at 24"-30" only getting 370umol. They are a joke and don't even know how to measure there own lights. Front page on their site they say 2000umols and 186,00lumens...the when you get product page no numbers are close to what they said.

Hey all. Im looking to do two 2x4 SOG tents. I was checking out the Area 51, not too ridiculously expensive. Can I get away with one Area 51 per tent + T5 supplemental side lighting or do I need 2 51's per tent? Thanks

^^^ 2 x SGS-160s would be optimal for sogging since you do want as much light as possible according to the experts but I think 1 A51 SGS-160 and supplementing it would work, though I wouldn't go the T5 route. Cree bulbs or SMD arrays with very tight beam angles is what I would go with, though a small CMH at each end would rock too. Good Luck A 5!

I have an SGS-160 red+white with 120/155 draw. I just noticed there is now an SGS-160 with only white and a 120/175 draw. I saw no PAR or spectrum charts specifically for the white version of the light. I am curious of anyone's opinions on this version of the SGS's effectiveness in flower vs the lower power red + white.

5 watters are a bitch to cool so if your not seeing some heavy duty cooling the manufacturer is probably running them soft which isn't the best for marijuana. And I bet those lenses aren't the best grade so they may be really affecting the panel's output. If they're creating heat they're fucking up the output and spectrum. 90 degree beam angles would be better I bet, especially after you remove the panel's glass. I have a 5x60 and it works but what it produces isn't worth the cost of running it, though the LEDs used by your manufacturer are probably better than the ones I have, though that isn't a given. Good Luck bouncin. And I'm subbed up for your journal btw :).

I would slow down a little and see how happy you are by the end of flower. You can veg with almost anything but flowering is a different story.

Between you and the guy who ran off to buy 2 of them, is it safe to assume the opinion is that these are viewed as being able to produce equivalent or better results in flower?
Are they designed for flowering???with straight 4500k xpg........... I wouldn't be too concerned about them, now an all cree xte warm white panel would intrigue me.
