how do people generally get busted in this "industry"?

is it that somehow they get detected by some enforcement radar system ? or is it something else?

is there any way enforcement agencies can detect people growing? whether it be a small amount outdoor in your garden, or under lights (be it LED or the other kinds) basically what i am asking can enforcement detect using helicopters with thermal imaging etc? or some other method such as picking up the smells with chemical readers in air etc?

There are plenty of ways to avoid detection. Ventilate properly , mask/elimate odor and tell no one about the grow and you should be fine.

so they can actually detect the smell in the air? do you know from how far? or is this just in case they smell it in person?

No they can't detect it in the air people walking by can detect it if it's not properly being controlled. Nosey neighbors walking by people coming over where the grow is. It will smell like fresh bud with odor control so anybody will know what's going on.

99% of the time its down to you telling the wrong mate or not using a carbon filter, so everyone one can smell it down your street

Three simple rules:

1-Don't Tell [do not tell a soul]
2-Don't Sell [Grow for your own needs]
3-No Smell [anyway you can control odor-do it] Always make sure your "OUT flow" of air from your room, will be more than the In Flow...
That way a negative pressure keeps the odor in your exhaust/filter... If the exhaust is too small, or clogged by by faulty carbon filter,
The smell will blow out of every crack in the grow...in other words... the smell will engulf your place....

after reading this article i am more worried about the heat the lights give off

look at this article and the picture ofa house giving off heat from cannabis set up

however my plan is to use LED as they dont give off as much heat as other lights, but i think to be extra sure i am going ot purchase my own IR gun and scan the property myself

No need to go that far. Most ops that get detected are "big" ones so I don't think they will be looking at a personal indoor closet grow. Choosing a led would be even better if you are worried about heat tho.

i dont know better safe then sorry,

its not worth being busted

besides i am going with the LED option, but still i want to be safe because my grow tent will be outside in the backyard , i dont have space for it indoors
