Admirable attempt, reminds me of my first grow many years ago. I had to break down and buy a 400 hps eventually.

Put the plant in a dog kennel cage with small enough holes that the cat can't get to the plant...maybe wrap sides with fine screen if needed or cat tries to reach in with its claws. :P
Cage the plant not the animal. ;)
