Everyone tells me that I need to ditch my ph color dropper tester kit and get a real wand, problem being, im not spending $100+ on one of these fancy things. Does anyone know a good inexpensive one that does its job well?

That $14 meter looks like one I used to have. It was about as accurate as a popsicle stick. If I didn't like the reading, just try again a couple times and it will come up. It would never give me the same reading twice. At least you won't be out too much money if you find you can't trust it and end up going back to the drops. Check it out and let us know.
