However blowing 80% of my budget on a light and the rest as I go along doesn't quite work .... a light I can't use is rather worthless .
Sure I can use it a few months down the road when I've scraped together everything else I'll need .... December 7th is a few weeks away , not months away .

I'd just love to start with a top of the line set up . I can afford a minimal beginner set up . I'm happy with my choice .

I know you mentioned that you're in Ohio. DM me if you’re close to SW corner of the state or feel like driving. I have an old light setup you can have for free - it’s old technology and out of good conscience I cant take any money for it. I’d like to give it away to someone who can use it because I don’t anymore. 48” - 8 bulb - High Output T5. It has newer bulbs that all work and you can have any of the extra replacement bulbs too. The fixture has 2 switches, so you can either use 4 or all 8 bulbs at a time. It uses like 450-ish watts. It’s strong enough to be a good veg light and will get you lit up and growing for now. You can upgrade when you’re ready to flower (in 2-3 months).

Because light is the foundation of everything you're trying to accomplish. You can have the best potting soil, nutrients, ventilation, genetics, etc. but if you don't have an adequate light, you're not going to have a good harvest. You obviously can't spend all of your budget on a light but that's where the majority of your money should go.

Thank you for the offer , however I am way over on the other side of the state in Columbiana county .

I know 200 watts isn't ideal , but I think it'll get me started . And like I mentioned I should be able to add in some supplemental lighting when it's time to flower .

Aside from genetics, the light is the next important limiting factor. If you were trying to build a drag car, would you throw a 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated, in it, until you could afford a v8?

Now I do apologize for get snarky , I've got one skull pounder of a headache happening and it's making me cranky

You can get fine results using a budget light especially for starters. I grow weed with led strip lights for fun which has horribly low ppfd. I got two 150w ts1000 mars hydros for a 2.5x5.

I got two 65w leds after market for veg tent 2x4. Just preference to shop looking at ppfd maps that give the good range of 600-900ppfd around the map with less watts as possible. Fire hazard. Lights that can be ran on 100%. Longevity. Not much more than that.

If I had to upgrade, I would Shop based on that but was more than happy with budget lights so far. Never had buds grow larfy from it, maybe my strip light grow but was still happy with the weed tend to keep using it. Disclaimer, Im a newbie grower but just my two cents.

We are always lusting after new/better lights. Ok maybe only me. Get what you can get now to get started. Just prioritize your substrate and light then add in the others as cheaply as you can in priority for you. If a kit fits your needs go for it. I'm pretty lazy LOL. Anyway I hope your head feels better. Headaches are miserable.

I think I can figure out the tent itself easy enough along with ventilation and a filter .

So let's start with a light .. led and budget minded .
What lights should I be looking at ?

Edit .. I'm sure this is important for light selection.
Yield won't be my prime focus , important yes but a successful grow over rides that .
And variety is the spice of life , I'd like to do three different strains in my first grow , and I haven't decided between a photo cycle or auto cycle .

Myself it took 1 grow until I knew everything I was doing wrong then I started simplifying everything a good rich medium that doesn’t hold water an use water 15 days min I do mean min an light feeds instead of heavy learn to grow a healthy plant an work it from there

As you continue on your journey and do more grows, you'll realize a whole lot more things you're doing wrong now. You're going to learn something with every grow, because the plants will teach you something different every time.

But you've got one hell of a good start!
