input for a new light for scrog.

i am planning my next new build.i will be using a 4 foot by 4 foot scrog in a cabinet with the same dimensions that is 6 foot tall.
i ask all the experts here what size chip for this set up.i do not need alot of penetration.the plants will be tied down.
i am looking at using 800 watts for light but am thinking of using variable drivers so i have option of running lower or higher.
the cabinet has a 8 inch carbon filter and fan so the heat from 800 watts is no problem(have been running 2 600 watt digital hps in there and only temp problem is full blast in summer)

i am considering using cxa3070 or vero 10 or vero18.
will smaller chips work?

Using 2x 600W HPS lamps in a 4'x4' footprint is so overkill, even if you had a 8 foot tall box. That's 75W/sqft.

You could easily get away with 30W/sqft. That's a 480W! You don't need 800W of vero or cxa3070 for 16sqft.

24x vero 18 3000k at 700mA would give you about 480W with about 38% efficiency. 312 dollars for the eggs. cxa3070 would give you even better efficiency, but but i'm not sure which is better cost up front per PAR watt.

Consider HLG-185H-C700 with 9x vero 18 per sink/panel/unit.

So 2 of those drivers would power 18x vero 18, and you could make it 2 units, each unit being 180W dissipation.

154 dollars for both drivers, 234 dollars for 18x vero 18.360W total setup. You could then add a third panel.

That's just one idea.

(edit: It may actually be possible to fit 10x vero 18 per driver, not just 9 if the forward voltage fits)

with the hps 600's i grow bare bulb vertical and one plant tied directly to each wall.i run the digital ballasts at 75 % for 6 months out of the year so that is only 900 watts.i am going to try horizontal with the leds.800 watts is 50 watts a s.f. i also plan on using dimmable drivers to see how much or little i need.it is always better to have more then enough light and dim then not have enough.and when you dim the cob becomes more efficient.i dont mind the upfront cost .i have not grown horizontally in about 5 years.i am tired of having to crawl in to trim and tie the plants on the back wall and the back of the 2 side walls(been getting too fat)

with the bare bulbs i have got any where from 16 to 45 ozs a crop.the 45 oz crop was sour d but my patients did not like it.i like trying new builds and i only have to convert one of my 3 flower boxes to try out.i just pull the stacked 600's out and hang the new led panel .i want complete coverage with the option to turn off individual lights .that way as the plants fill the screen i turn on more and waste less power.

church how close can you go with the vero 18?how far and they still produce good?i have only played with chinese cobs so far doing initial testing.i have built 4 100 watt 45 mil chinese cob lights and am almost done and ready to install 3 5o watt cobs in my veg cabinet.

I try to keep them about 4-6 inches from the canopy at 700mA, and have the cobs spaced about 6 inches apart from each other.

700mA vero 18 is about 20W dissipation. All cobs for the most part produce a 120 degree cone pattern for the 50% intensity cutoff point. So you've got a bunch of 20W 120 degree light cones. If you chop those cones, the cross section is a circle. You can use geometry to find the height of the cone needed to get a certain size diameter, etc.

If you want the light farther from the canopy, consider vero 29 at 1400mA.

it is not that i want to have the light further from the plants,i want to know how close the bigger cobs can be or how far away they need to be so no bleaching.will the smaller cobs or individual leds be able to get rock hard buds?i blew a bunch of money on commercial leds starting with the first ufo from hid hut and 4 more over the years.my testers made from ebay chips drivers and heat sinks look promising but most of the led grows on here are traditional horizontal grows so i will try them that way first.i like scrogging any way i grow and have not seen any led scrogs with the bigger cobs.
