Insulated Ducting questions

When they advertise the insulated ducting, is it just a wrap or does it actually come with the flexible ducting inside of it? Not sure if I should go out and buy the ducting and some insulation for a DIY job or just order the Insulated Ducting.

Also, im going to be running a 4" Vortex fan. If i mounted a 4" to 6" reducer and used 6" ducting, would that lower the "wooshing" sound of the air passing? Thanks!

Hi VB, the insulated ducting is complete, it's two pieces of ducting with fibreglass insulation between. As for your idea with the noise, yes that would work.

Thanks for the reply, now if I can find the insulated ducting in a 6" size, my "one-step-closer-to-stealth" journey begins.

(i turned this 4" vortex fan on and let it run in my closet while i walked through the house, can def hear it in the hallway and the room behind me)

as for silencing the actual fan, im going to be putting it in a cooler lined with carpet foam and filled with compact chunks of egg crate bed foam

6" size is pretty common at least here at lowes. I recently replaced all of my duct work on the furnace with that size.

Awesome, I just assumed it may be hard to find because bghydro.com carried every other size BUT 6". Any idea how much it cost?

Yep insulated duct works against noise, not a great deal but its does make a difference, i use 5" accoustic/insulated ducting, or sonoduct as its called here.


Edit, when you cut the accoustic duct to size, be carefull of the fibreglass insulation, it itches you like fuck lol

^^ ah dude, i was working with fiberglass one time and got the actual strands embedded in my hands with the hardener...wanted to cut my hands off lol

Lol yea mate, i know the feeling been in similar situations with fibreglass, the mother of all things itchy

i had a noisy fan so i tried everything i wrapped the fan in dynamat and all sorts of shit...eventually i bought a speed controler and turned the speed down a bit and it worked like a charm
