I read this:

At least eight hours of light a day must
be provided. As you increase the light,
the plants grow faster and show more
females/less males. Sixteen hours of
light per day seems to be the best
combination, beyond this makes little or
no appreciable difference in the plant
quality. Another idea is to interrupt the
night cycle with about one hour of light.
This gives you more females.

is this true...

total bs, a plants gender is determined long before you even germinate it. no light cycle will ensure more females than males, if you interupt the light cycle an hour everyday you will turn all your female plants into she-males(literally)

Wouldn't that cause stress on the plant? IMO that would prob produce you a few more hermies then you would like :confused:

because its bullshit, im sorry its basic biology...the sex of the plant is determined when the female gets pollinated and the gametes mix! Right there, the sex is made up...However this can eb fucked up and you can get Shemales but never actually change the sex.

Yes but its very amusing watching people lay bananas in and around their pots through out their grow or putting banana peels in a ziplock bag with their seeds for 2 weeks :lol:

what we've all got to remember is 99.9999% of the people on here growing are dope heads with too much time on there hands and we all know what its like to lie on the couch after a real good smoke/bong and pop up bullshit theorys about how to solve ALL the worlds problems, every now and then one mite actually be true( although i prefer the really fucked up theorys that only make sense to the truly stoned). lets face it most of us wouldnt change it 4 the world. long live the stoners day dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, this is probably wrong. Cannabis has been found to more than likely have a more complicated sex determining mechanism than the dioecious XY system like that of humans. 80 years ago this is what was thought, but not today. Often this supposed system is referred to as the X:A system, where the second chromosome can not only be changed per se, but influenced by environmental factors, such as light cycles. 12/12 light from seed has shown to increase the number of females, and ethylene and auxin have been used to create more females, and cytokinins and gibberellins have had masculinating effects on cannabis. I wouldn't recommend 12/12 from seed unless you are desperate for females, like say on a first grow, because it puts the plant through stress and will obviously not yield much. I don't understand what "interrupting the light cycle by one hour" means in the OP. If that means giving it light for an hour in the middle of its' dark cycle, then I would assume this couldn't be beneficial, but instead lead to more hermies, just as darkdestruction said.

Gender is determined on seed creation, but cannabis is one of the plants where the gender can and WILL change if environmental factors demand it.

There are many things that can influence the sex to change.

Jorge Cervantes in his indoor grow bible lists a couple of things that influence what determines the sex of a seed after it germinates. He even lists things you can do to help get more females. I don't think it bs coming from him. A seeds sex is not already implanted into its genes unless those genes have been manipulated like feminized seeds.

Im gonna read the study, im skeptical about it. Or its accuracy, im sure that "sex" is determined and to do with X and Y but it can be hermied and fucked with...Interesting stuff though, cheers for bringing it up im gonna give it a read ( studying bioscience so its interesting )
