Introductory idea

hey there fellow greenthumbs!
I just wanted to say hello to everybody and ask the opinion of some. i want to start an automated garden type setup with only the resouces i have accessible. now i am a tech savy person and know a bit about robotics, circutry, and programming. with that said i had an idea. an idea i am sure has been done before. my appologies if it has.

anyways my idea is basically the jarvis of your grow. indoor or outdoor i have yet to determine. but what i do know is this
1.)i want a garden that can monitor itself and respond appropiatly
2.)can automate processes that would be vital to potency in the end result

this is mind you just a rough draft of the whole concept but for those who do understand what i am trying to say input good or bad would be great. f you are unclear about something please feel fre to ask or message me personally..... so here it is the blueprint for it all (remeber just a draft)

THE GROW

What are the basic necessities to grow
1.) seed
2.) pots
3.) soil
4.) lighting
5.) water
6.) nutrients
7.) carbon dioxide
8.) oxygen
9.) airflow

what are the key nutrients
1.) N-P-K (nitroge-potassium-phosphorus)
2.) organic additives

marijuana grow cycle
1.) germinating
2.) seedling
3.) vegging
a.)clone
b.)mother
c.)breeding
4.) sexing
5.) flowering
6.) cropping
a.)curing
b.)testing potancy
c.)price/quality assuance
b.)storage (what is shelf life)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Automation
1.) timing
2.) watering
3.) lighting
4.) feeding
5.) airflow
a.)temp
b.)humidity
c.)soil moisture

Again this is a draft. Everything will be done using an arduino, breadboard, various other programming and controller interfaces..

Hopefully i can get this clusterf**K in my head onto some paper and get it working. i will be working with my mentor and an electrical engineer. i know that home automation and garden automation have been done before but i have never seen a almost fully automated growbox before.

Hopefully im going in the right direction.

so far i can turn off and on lighting depending on the sensor data. I have learned how to do this with light and temp so far. im trying to think of the things needed the most and see if automation is possible.

most of us just use a timer to turn on/off the lights, works rather effective and accurate as the on/off cycle is not related to temps but is a fixed period of time depending on veg or flower stage.

IMO....I enjoy growing, so a fully automated grow would not be fun.

Welcome to RIU. I happen to stumble upon something like what u wanted to do. It's all the LEAF. Google and check it out. Maybe u can surpass their idea or just steal their ideas and technology lol :hump:

Yes i completely agree with you on that aspect. I love the whole process from seed to smoke but my intention was to just have the system as a fail safe basically. I will be tending to them on a regular basis, I enjoy technology and robotics so i thought it would be a fun project to do with spare time. This is definitely not my first grow so i know what the plants need.

All in all i just thought it would be something fun to do and if it flops oh well i had fun doing it and learned new things. And i thought it would be cool to be able to monitor the grow room remotely and possibly even control some aspects. The upside to it is that if you need to go out of town for a few days you can put your mind at ease knowing you can sort of be in the grow room without physically being in the grow room :bigjoint:

Thanks for the tip! Although I had seen this a few months back it is kind of what triggered the idea for the build. Great thing is i pretty much have all of the sensors already. I have photoresistors, temp sensors, etc..

Lol dreamer
I may be dreaming but dreams come true and with the day and age we are in now anything is possible the sky is the limit. So please by all means think what you want because its is just an opinion and the world is full of those.

I would like to thank you all for your greetings and input into the idea. Any criticism good or bad is great, thats what helps bring an idea to life. I will hopefully have some pics up of what im working with currently. :peace:

Welcome and sounds like your pretty set in trying this out ....i know you probably know this but they make some pretty nice gadgets like timers etc to accomplish what your trying to recreate .......but that being said good luck in your project I'm not a very tech Savy guy myself so obviously this wouldn't make much sense to me Ya never know you may just create the next big thing and get rich then come back and laugh at answers like mine ......either way I'm a very avid grower and love to be involved in my gardens through the whole process sometimes going in my garden is a mini vacation for me lol. Good luck and happy growing Welcome

If you can get it all down to one button to push for a seed to harvest grow, you'll be rich!

Keep in mind that we are talking about a nuanced plant that has variable needs throughout grow cycle that vary by strain and pheno, so I am betting against you getting to the one button solution, but wishing you luck on getting as far as you can!
