I agree, it also helps drive home the fact its an LED grow. What I would do was just take a picture of them before I took them out, then take one under normal light once I pulled them out.

You are correct (a 400 HPS draws 480watts of power ) a 400 watt led will usually draw less then 400w's not always the case.
300watt LED will replace a 400 watt HPS so yes all around cheaper to run.
Spectra 300 300Watt (305watt true draw ) but can out preform a 400W HPS
Stealth Grow 300Watt ( True draw is 288watts ) Something like that lol Its usually similar but you gotta find the right product i would stick with Spectra Look at the results!

what do you think about running a 300w spectra in between 2 1kw hps? I have a large area and want to get some xtra coverage in between, so thought maybe LED so I'm not adding more heat?
What's up with the new spectra product, on their site it says the 500 is the new 300 and the 300 is the new 180? is that because they switched to 3w bulbs or what? I mean who would pay 1300$ for something now that was $699 last year? Are the 2010 models still available in the 300w? their site is under construction a little bit so its quite confusing. Would you recommend not going with the 2010 model and going with the new technology? Even if that means waiting another 3 weeks to order?

I could get 3 400's and run one in the middle, 2 on the sides of the 2 1k's and get more coverage- yes it'll be more power an heat, but way more coverage for the money.

There is no mention of "spectra" on that page you linked, no its the wrong company. Growledhydro is the correct company, the confusion comes from how the used to name their units like everyone else (# of diodes x the max wattage of each diode). But then they switched to naming them by how total wattage they actually draw. Then they updated their tech from a mix of 2w and 3w to all 3w and the amount of power went up and he decided to also just sell panels of a differen't wattage. Now you can basically get a true 180w or 290w or 500w that is what they use (well technically they might use up to 5w more because GLH likes to name them with a 0 at the end without saying their units use more power than they actually do). I'd recommend one settle for 30-40w of GLH LED per square foot, I have 62w per square foot in my 2.5x2.5 and its definitely a waste of its potential.
PS: there is at least 1 other company with a very similar name, that also helps contribute to the confusion sometimes

After thinking about this shit all night, and still not having bought my 2nd 1kw ballast or bulb (I got the hood) I was thinking of possibly saying fuck that HID and replacing it with an LED. I'm guessing from what you say 30-40w of led per SQ ft that the spectra 290 isn't going to replace it. So I'm looking at the 500 then eh?
Quesiton will a 500 be enough coverage for say a 6x6 area? or would I need to but the bastard on a mover? that might be pretty sick, 1kw HID next to a 500w LED on a 4ft mover.
Thoughts? Do you think I'll see the return on the extra money spend, say in the first year? I've got about $400 left to spend on the 1kw and bulb, I can sell my XXXtreme 8 hood for $225, I have buddy willing to invest $300 for 2.5z of meds in the future so thats $925 right there. It might take me another week or 2, but I'm really trying to decide if it will be a good move vs a 1kw HPS @ 155k lumens (digilux bulb on a digilux ballast).

Irish will likely advise the same, a single 500w panel would not be enough at 14w per square foot, but more importantly it would be taking on a tent almost double what it should. If I were you to save money (upfront and in electricity usage over time) I would start off by buying 1 or 2 of the smaller ones and going from there if you can/feel like it. There are TONS of advantages to having more smaller watt panels than a single bigger one (if you can reasonably fit the smaller ones).
But be warned, with GLH it can take up to 2 weeks before your order ships out of California unless you happen to get them at the right time or they have some exchanges that showed up (you can get a discount on used units that were traded in)

I talked to the owner of GLH about their new products and comps to other systems. First of all he didn't make any ridiculous claims that the other compaines I'm finding online are making. I asked him about 2 -300's vs the 500 since they are the exact same price point for either option, he confirmed that 2 of his 290 units will put out a bit more light than the 500, and since they are independent obviously get more coverage than the 500. Since I'm working with a larger 2nd half to my garden I asked him if 2 would be enough coverage for 7x6 - he said no. I asked if 2 would replace a 1000w, he also said no. (while some are claiming just 1 of their 300w systems replaces a 1kw). I asked if 3 would replace a 1kw, he said it should most certainly outperform the 1kw in yield. But mentioned LED puts out a more resinous product than HID. He talked about the 12 rooms that he is growing with these LED's, and is saying the quality of meds is so much better while you will sactifice a little yield. However when comparing watt to watt power consumption, the LEDS smash the HID's - but its just so damn expensive to get yourself to that 1000watt level in LED's.
as far as the new 2011 products goes, he said they put better power supplies in them (toshiba LED tv PSU) and a bigger heatsink.
The discount he was able to offer me was 5% for mentioning this thread (if you don't want me to disclose that, let me know and I'll edit it out).
So before I pull the trigger on 2 of these 290's for $1330, Irish (and other who have used a wide array of LED's) are you confident this manufacture of LED's is the best on the market today? from your expereince?

He was thinking these 2-300's would give a canopy coverage @ about the same rate of a 1kw - 4x4-5x5 and I'm hoping it'll play well with my existing 1kw, and even bleed over into that canopy hopefully. I'll probably rotate my plants back and forth weekly so all get both specturms. Looking back it would be nice to have a light mover or 2. But since I'm going to drop the BIG DIME and spend over a grand on 600watts of lights, I just can't justify any more expenses in my grow at this time. Before these I'm already in for $3500. FUCK

I can't say they're the best because I haven't seen enough done with other companies lights, but I can say I haven't seen as many completed grows done with any other company (or such consistently good results without complaints about it not working as well as thought/claimed. I do think they are the best for the money though, as they are the only company that uses all 3w diodes in 12 wavelengths wtih the safety tech that keeps 1 dead LED from cutting off power to more (only a few other companies do this, but not with 3w diodes and 12 wavelengths) and they only charge $2.9-$3 per watt for all that when most companies want up to $5 and run old tech (the cheapest that is worth it I know of is Blackstar 3w panels for $1.8-$2, but they don't have that safety tech). Absolutely they will perform better watt for watt than HID, but a 7x6 space is a pretty big space for LED without light movers (you may want to consider it if you intend to fill up that whole space with good light and not spend more than a few grand).
*my 395w sure as shit covered my patients medicine with WAY more trichomes than the 400w HPS ever did, others claim the smoke is a slightly higher quality too (aside from higher potency from more trichomes)

I appreciate the input. I think I'm gonna go with the 2-290's for now and when/if I love them or need more coverage, I'll spring for the 3rd (lets see some results first). The 7x6 area is just a rough guess of what i'm workin with really. I've got a decent sized bedroom 12x14 blocked off @ 7ft with foam insulation from a lumber yard (to keep light out and in) - right now i've got a 1kw in a XXXtreme 8'' hood (those hoods are huge footprint, since the hood is 40''x30'') I would say my growing footprint with that is 6x5.5 (call it 6 x 6) so i've got another 6 feet long to cover plus the initial 7ft width of the false room. anyways I don't have to fill the plants wall to wall, thats just kind of what im working with. With extra space on the sides of the entire 7x12 area it will allow for proper air circulation. I'm just looking at numbers if I were to max it out so to speak.
