Is 1 indica plant under 400w a bit of a waste?

Hi guys,

I am starting a grow soon, and still quite the noobie, I have 1 light -400w HPS-

Max height is around 5 foot (for pure plant (light and pot space already accounted for))
(Opps) EDIT: I'm using soil :D

my question is what is more efficient:

1 plant: X time vegging + 8 weeks flowering = Y weight

4 plants: Z time vegging + 8 weeks flowering = I weight

So, heres an example:

1 plant: total grow time 6 months = Y weight

4 plants:total grow time 3 months = I weight

Would the single plant offer more weight than the 4 plants x 2 grows?

I personally grow 4 plants under a single 400 watter as I have found that with lst and attention to detail you can get a bigger yield than any other number, believe me I have tried! I grow 12/12 from seed an normally yield 1/2 pound dry from 4 plants ( I have major height issues) that reach 2-3 ft when finished. But I am sure you will get differing answers from different growers. I also grow flood and drain, so figures are based on that, I am currently experimenting with hempy bucket with four plants in one bucket so I will see the difference in yield in about 4 more weeks!:joint:

Say, fancy giving me some numbers?

How long do you veg for?

Do you have an approx length of the plants at anytime? (I could do the same but wouldn't need to worry about height)

To be honest, I just wanted to grow the biggest and widest plant I could as a secondary goal - as the primary goal is getting smashed as often as possible. hehe.

As I said above I DONT VEG!! If you grow one huge plant you run the risk of the 'all eggs in one basket' scenario and when it is harvested you have a shit load of weed to keep in your house-dodgy. I grow 4 plants, no veg, finish 2-3 ft high, yield 2 dry ounces per plant, seed to harvest in 63-71 days, 5 crops per year, 5x8oz = 40oz. total light hours =365x12=4380hours@£0.50per day =£182.5pa.

nb. A single 400watter will NOT penetrate much past 3 ft so big plants are really a waste of time.

Oh sorry, my bad. - no veg - gotcha :)

Another Q: what size pots are you using?

I like your style, I'm planning basically the same thing, maybe a month or two vegging to take up some height.

Thanks alot for your help. much appreciated :D

another Q actually: If you were jammy, you think you could fit more plants in with the right amount of ground space?

ok, final Q: so, you take 2 pots away, and the 2 remaining plants, you lst into the space of the 2 taken away - with the right amount of veg time you could fill the space of the other 2; have you tried this?

Why did you rule this out, if you didnt?
How well did it go, if you did?

Sorry about all the questions - I'm naturally inquisitive - maybe i should have been a journalist >.>

Anyway, thanks again for your help and possibly help to come.

Flood and drain I use 1.4ltr 14x14cm square pots, I have tried all variables and find 4 to be optimum for my space, growing 2 and training to fill the gaps takes longer so less yield per annum. You could fit many more if you wished but would only get 1/4-1/2oz per plant (sog) More plants in the UK means more time inside, the courts dont care how big they are they presume they all yield the same, so 4 plants are safe-slap on the wrist/caution as personal use is obviously all you are up to in their eyes. So the combination of safety, room, yield and grow length are why I now grow 4x2oz plants 5 times a year and feel safe in the knowledge that if my roof blows off and people report my grow I wont be seen as a dealer(which im not LOL). But trial and error is what you need to find out for yourself. But lastly remember that if you only grow one plant the light is not up to it, unless you scrog it and the plant may die and you are without, after its harvested you have so much weed that if caught you WOULD be classed as a dealer for sure!:joint:

Thanks alot man,

I'm from UK too... wasnt too sure about the amount of plants vs mass of plants and the laws on them.

I guess 4 plants it is then, consider me converted. :D

I gotta ask one more question... lol. Say you were using soil, how big would the pots be that you use?

Asking a dude who uses hydro to grow what pot size he uses?! - what kind of idiot am I >.<

I have a small cabinet with a 400w light. It's 4' wide, but only 20" deep, so I do three plants, using white square pots that hold about 3.5 gallons. Here's a pic of the inside, with three NYC Diesel plants.

I can see you having the same problems I had 3 years ago.
if you veg for a month, or 2. Your plant will be over 5 feet. for indica. My first grow I didnt realize my plant would double or tripple in size. I was pulling her top cola down cus she wanted to grow right into the light, the others tryed to become tops and it was insane to watch. I would veg no more than 1 month if you need to keep em small. This is from clone. I dont use seed, No time to wait for sexing..

nice work

Your situation and mine are similar. I only have about 35 inches of space between the top of my grow medium, and my aircooled 400 watter, I am trying to get the same results you just said. Could you give me some pointerskiss-ass
